Last updated 7 October 2026. Fares were checked on 7 October 2026. Canadian dollar amounts use the European Central Bank reference rates of 6 October 2026, about C$1.425 to the US dollar, and change daily. You pay us in US dollars or euros, not Canadian dollars. Government advice is quoted from travel.gc.ca.

A Canadian planning a Himalayan trek faces two questions before any booking. Which trek, and what does the whole trip add up to once flights are counted? This page answers both with fares I looked up on 7 October and our own prices, and it quotes what the Government of Canada says about travel to Nepal.

What the Government of Canada says

Travel.gc.ca asks travellers to exercise a high degree of caution in Nepal, with regional advisories. The page was last updated on 31 August 2026, so read it again before you fly. On trekking it says never to go alone and always to hire an experienced guide from a reputable company. It says to get travel insurance that includes coverage for medical evacuation and hospital stays, and it adds that most hospitals require up-front payment or confirmation of insurance coverage before providing treatment.

For help, consular services come from the Honorary Consul in Kathmandu and the High Commission of Canada in New Delhi, and the Emergency Watch and Response Centre in Ottawa takes calls. The Tourist Police hotline in Kathmandu is 1144.

What it costs, trek by trek

Prices are per person for one to four trekkers, in Canadian dollars rounded to the nearest 5, with the US dollar price in brackets. They come from our booking system on 7 October 2026 and hold for 2027.

Flights from Toronto and Vancouver

The search was economy, one adult, a cabin bag and a checked bag, out on Sunday 25 October 2026 and back on Wednesday 11 November, on one ticket.

I ran one search for Toronto (YYZ) and one for Vancouver (YVR), each allowing one change of plane every way. Toronto returned 15 itineraries from CAD 2,416 to CAD 2,951. Vancouver returned 13, from CAD 3,315 to CAD 5,866. I did not run a nonstop-only search, and every itinerary changed planes each way.

Toronto. The cheapest, CAD 2,416, is Qatar Airways through Doha in both directions. Going out it leaves Toronto at 21:10 on 25 October and reaches Kathmandu at 14:35 on 27 October, with a night's wait in Doha, about 31 hours 40 minutes in all. Coming home, Kathmandu 17:30 on 11 November and Toronto 14:30 on 12 November takes about 31 hours 45 minutes. Air India through Delhi is faster out (Toronto 12:15, Kathmandu 20:40 the next day, about 22 hours 40 minutes). With Qatar Airways home that was CAD 2,891, with Air India home CAD 2,904 and with Cathay Pacific home through Hong Kong CAD 2,951.

Vancouver. The lowest fare, CAD 3,315, is Cathay Pacific out through Hong Kong (Vancouver 01:05 on 25 October, Kathmandu 21:30 on 26 October, about 31 hours 40 minutes) and Air India home through Delhi (Kathmandu 17:10, Vancouver 07:30 the next morning, about 27 hours 5 minutes). Air Canada to Bangkok with Thai Airways on to Kathmandu, and Air India home, was CAD 5,125. Every itinerary included a personal item, a cabin bag and a checked bag.

The whole Everest trip from Toronto, in Canadian dollars

Here is the arithmetic for one traveller on the 12-day Everest Base Camp trek, using the Toronto fares above. Vancouver adds about CAD 899 on the cheapest fares. The extras column covers a 30-day visa, insurance and tips, with meals on Budget and pocket money on Standard and Luxury. Kathmandu hotels are extra, and our own family homestay is US$15 per person a night, about CAD 20.

LuxuryCAD 7,120CAD 2,416 to CAD 2,951CAD 760 to CAD 1,200CAD 10,290 to CAD 11,280

The extras column rests on my own estimates, not on a price list. Budget meals are put at US$25 to US$40 a day, pocket money on Standard and Luxury at 20,000 to 30,000 rupees (US$130 to US$195), and tips at US$15 to US$20 per guide day and US$10 to US$15 per porter day.

Getting in

Nepal's immigration department does not list Canada among the twelve nationalities that must apply before travel, so a Canadian passport takes the visa on arrival: US$30 for 15 days, US$50 for 30 days (about CAD 70) or US$125 for 90 days. Children under ten are free. The online arrival form needs a passport valid for at least six months. See our visa on arrival guide and e-visa guide.

Insurance and the Canadian advice

The Government of Canada's advice says to buy insurance that includes medical evacuation and hospital stays, since most hospitals want payment up front or proof of cover. For a trek that means a policy naming trekking to 6,000 m for Everest, Manaslu and Langtang (5,000 m is enough for Annapurna Base Camp, Mardi Himal and Poon Hill) and including helicopter evacuation, which would otherwise be a very large bill. Read the exclusions, not the brochure: helicopter cover to 6,000 m. Send me the wording and I will go through it with you.

Fit for Canada

Vancouver's Grouse Grind is a good test of legs. Grouse Mountain lists it as 2.5 km, an 800 m climb and 2,830 stairs, and says it takes up to 2 to 2.5 hours. Do it, then do it again with a loaded pack. What it cannot teach is altitude: Everest Base Camp sleeps at 5,164 m, and our itineraries keep two rest days for adjusting. Our page on how fit you need to be has a plan.

Which month

October to November is the settled season and the busiest. March to May is warmer, with flowers on the lower slopes. December to February is cold at height, so it suits Poon Hill and Mardi Himal better than Everest or Manaslu. The monsoon, June to September, spoils most views.

Nepali holidays matter for planning: Dashain is 17 to 23 October 2026 and Tihar is 8 to 12 November. Offices close, and permits need 48 hours of government working days. In busy weeks Lukla flights may leave from Manthali instead, which is a four to five hour road journey with a pick-up between midnight and 2 am. Luxury trekkers go by helicopter from Kathmandu instead.

What each tier gives you

Pick a tier by how much you want to carry and organise yourself. Budget: your own pack on your back, shared rooms, your own meals. Standard: meals included, a private room, and a porter between two people, so a single traveller has none and the guide carries up to 10 kg of the load. Luxury: a porter just for you, a private deluxe room with a bathroom, fruit and nuts, soft drinks as you like, and on the Everest trek a helicopter in and out of Lukla in place of the small plane. The guide, the permits and a borrowed down jacket and sleeping bag (minus 15) are part of every price, and none carries a single supplement. You book your own Kathmandu hotel.

Paying us

Booking takes a 10 per cent deposit. You settle the rest on arrival in Kathmandu in US dollars or in euros, paying cash (no fee) or card (3.5 per cent extra). Canadian dollars and Nepali rupees are not accepted. You can rebook free for any date within a year as long as you tell us 72 hours before (seven days for Tibet, Kailash and restricted areas). The deposit itself is not refunded if you cancel. When the cancellation is ours, the refund is what you paid less taxes, bank and card charges and permit or flight money already spent.

Who we are

Everything about us can be checked independently. The company was registered in Kathmandu in 2016 (registration 147653/072/073, trekking licence 2090/072), TAAN lists us as member 1586, and the guiding in my family goes back three generations. Over 300 travellers have left reviews on TripAdvisor, Google and Trustpilot. A licence is not a guarantee, as licensed firms have been involved in scams, so I would ask any company, including us, for a video call first. A part of what you pay supports the Nagarjun Learning Center.
