Everything about the Pokhara zipline from Sarangkot. How it works, cost, best time, what else to do in Pokhara, and how to fit it into your Nepal trip.

Is the Pokhara Zipline Worth It?

If you want a 2-minute adrenaline rush with a view of the Annapurna range, the Pokhara zipline delivers. It held the Guinness World Record for the steepest zipline when it opened, dropping 600 vertical metres over 1.8km at speeds up to 120km/h. You launch from Sarangkot ridge — the same viewpoint famous for sunrise over the Himalayas — and fly towards Hemja on the valley floor with Machapuchare and Annapurna in your peripheral vision.

Is it worth the price? That depends on what you value. If you are here for the view, Sarangkot is free to visit and the sunrise is equally spectacular without strapping yourself to a cable. If you want the thrill, the zipline is one of the most dramatic in Asia and the mountain backdrop makes it genuinely special.

How Does It Work?

You drive to the launch platform at Sarangkot (about 30 minutes from Pokhara Lakeside). After a safety briefing and harness fitting, you are clipped to the cable in a seated position (not superman-style — you sit upright in a harness). The launch is a simple step off the platform, and gravity does the rest.

The ride takes 1.5 to 2 minutes. You reach maximum speed in the middle section, which feels fast but controlled. The landing platform at Hemja has a braking system that slows you gradually. The whole experience from arrival to landing takes about an hour, including the drive up, briefing, and ride.

You do not need any special fitness or experience. Weight limits apply (typically 30 to 120kg). Children under 12 are not permitted. The operators have a clean safety record.

What Does It Cost?

The zipline costs approximately $60 to $80 USD per person (prices vary by season and operator). This includes transport from Lakeside to Sarangkot, the safety briefing, the ride, and return transport from the landing point.

Some operators offer package deals that combine the zipline with paragliding (another Pokhara classic) or with a sunrise viewing at Sarangkot before the ride. These packages offer better value than booking activities separately.

When Is the Best Time?

Morning, before 10am. The views are clearest in the early hours, and the Annapurna range is most likely to be visible. By midday, cloud often builds over the mountains, reducing the visual impact of the ride.

The zipline operates year-round except during heavy rain or high winds. October to April gives the best weather and visibility. Monsoon months (June to August) are operational but the mountains are usually hidden by cloud, which removes half the appeal.

If you are combining with a sunrise visit to Sarangkot, arrive at 5:30am for sunrise, watch the show, then ride the zipline at 7:30 or 8am when the operators open. This is the most efficient way to experience both.

What Else Can You Do in Pokhara?

Pokhara is Nepal's adventure capital. The zipline is just one option:

Paragliding: Tandem flights from Sarangkot over Phewa Lake with Annapurna views. 20 to 30 minutes in the air, no experience needed. One of the world's best paragliding locations.

Phewa Lake boating: Hire a rowboat and paddle to the Tal Barahi Temple on the island in the middle of the lake. Peaceful, cheap, and beautiful in the late afternoon light.

World Peace Pagoda: A white stupa on the hill above Phewa Lake. Walk up (45 minutes) or hire a boat across the lake and walk from the south side. Panoramic views of the lake and mountains.

Davis Falls: A waterfall that disappears into an underground cave system. Impressive during and just after monsoon season. Gupteshwor Cave is adjacent and worth the combined ticket.

Day hikes: The Australian Camp trek (2 to 3 hours from Pokhara) gives you mountain views without a multi-day commitment. The Panchase trek is a longer day option with rhododendron forests.

How Does Pokhara Fit Into a Nepal Trip?

Most trekkers pass through Pokhara before or after an Annapurna-region trek. If you have a spare day (and you should build one in), the zipline or paragliding fill it perfectly. Pokhara's Lakeside area also has good restaurants, massage shops, and shops for last-minute trekking gear.
