Kathmandu Valley packs an absurd amount of terrain into a relatively small area. Within 30 kilometres of Thamel, you can ride through terraced rice paddies, dense forests, ancient Newari villages, and ridgelines with full Himalayan panoramas. It is one of the best mountain biking destinations in South Asia, and most travellers never realise it.
Whether you are an experienced rider chasing technical singletrack or a casual cyclist who wants temple-lined dirt roads, the valley delivers. Here are eight trails worth your time, plus everything you need to plan the ride.
Why Kathmandu Valley Works for Mountain Biking
The valley sits between 1,300 and 2,700 metres elevation, so every ride includes meaningful climbing and descending. The trails connect living heritage sites u2014 7th-century temples, medieval palace squares, active monasteries u2014 which means you are never just pedalling through empty landscape. The weather is mild from October to April, the roads outside the ring road are quiet, and local bike shops have caught up with global standards.
If you want a structured trip with a guide, mechanic support, and vehicle backup, we run a 5-day Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour that covers the best of these trails.
1. Nagarkot to Changu Narayan
Distance: 18 km | Elevation: 2,100m start, 1,540m finish (mostly downhill) | Difficulty: Moderate | Time: 2u20133 hours
This is the classic Kathmandu Valley ride and the one most people do first. You start at Nagarkot, where the sunrise view stretches from Langtang to Everest on a clear morning, then descend along a ridge through pine and rhododendron forest. The trail ends at Changu Narayan, a UNESCO-listed temple from the 4th century. The downhill is forgiving u2014 wide dirt track with a few rocky sections u2014 so intermediate riders handle it comfortably. Hire a jeep to Nagarkot and ride back down.
Highlights: Himalayan panorama at dawn, forest canopy riding, Changu Narayan temple complex.
2. Shivapuri National Park Loop
Distance: 22 km | Elevation: 1,500m to 2,400m and back | Difficulty: Challenging | Time: 4u20135 hours
Shivapuri is the forested hill directly north of Kathmandu. The national park gate is at Budhanilkantha, and from there you climb steeply through oak and rhododendron forest on a mix of jeep track and singletrack. The upper sections are physically demanding u2014 expect to push the bike on a few steep pitches. The reward is dense forest, occasional deer sightings, and a fast descent back to the trailhead. Carry your national park entry permit (NPR 600 for foreigners).
Highlights: Pristine forest within city limits, challenging climbs, wildlife spotting.
3. Chobar to Champadevi
Distance: 14 km | Elevation: 1,400m to 2,280m | Difficulty: Difficult (technical singletrack) | Time: 3u20134 hours
This is the trail for riders who want proper technical terrain. Start at Chobar gorge, where the Bagmati River cuts through a limestone cliff, then climb south toward Champadevi peak. The singletrack is narrow, rooty, and exposed in places. From the top you get a full 360-degree view of the valley, with Langtang and Ganesh Himal to the north. Not recommended after rain u2014 the clay soil becomes dangerously slippery.
Highlights: Technical riding, Chobar gorge geology, panoramic summit views.
4. Kirtipur to Bungamati to Khokana
Distance: 16 km | Elevation: 1,300u20131,400m (relatively flat) | Difficulty: Easy | Time: 2u20133 hours
A cultural ride rather than an athletic one. You roll through three medieval Newari towns u2014 Kirtipur with its hilltop fortress, Bungamati where the Rato Machhindranath chariot is built, and Khokana with its mustard oil tradition. The riding is mostly flat on farm roads between rice paddies, with a few short cobblestone sections through the town centres. This is the ride for people who want to see how the valley lived before urbanisation swallowed the edges.
Highlights: Living Newari heritage, rice paddy riding, Machhindranath temple.
5. Kakani Loop
Distance: 25 km | Elevation: 1,400m to 2,070m and back | Difficulty: Moderate to challenging | Time: 3u20134 hours
Kakani sits on the northwest rim of the valley and is famous for its mountain views and strawberry farms. The ride from Balaju climbs steadily through terraced farmland and pine forest. At Kakani village you get Ganesh Himal, Langtang, and Manaslu lined up across the horizon. The descent on the back side passes apple orchards and scattered Tamang settlements. Best done on a clear autumn morning.
Highlights: Mountain views, apple and strawberry farms, quiet farming villages.
6. Lakuri Bhanjyang Ridge Ride
Distance: 20 km | Elevation: 1,400m to 2,100m | Difficulty: Moderate | Time: 3u20134 hours
Southeast of the valley, Lakuri Bhanjyang is a ridge that catches the first light of sunrise. The ride from Lubhu climbs through community forest on a jeep track, then follows the ridge with views on both sides u2014 the Kathmandu Valley to the west, the Kavre hills to the east. Sunrise riders leave at 4:30 AM and reach the top by 6:00 AM. The descent is fast and loose on gravel.
Highlights: Sunrise panorama, ridge riding, relatively uncrowded trail.
7. Pharping to Dakshinkali
Distance: 12 km | Elevation: 1,400m to 1,600m | Difficulty: Easy to moderate | Time: 2u20133 hours
A short ride through the southern valley that combines temples and trails. Pharping is a major Buddhist pilgrimage site with several monasteries and the cave where Guru Rinpoche is said to have meditated. The trail continues to Dakshinkali temple through forest and farmland. This is a good half-day ride or a warm-up for bigger days. Avoid Tuesdays and Saturdays when Dakshinkali is crowded with worshippers.
Highlights: Buddhist and Hindu pilgrimage sites, forest trails, manageable distance.
8. Budhanilkantha to Sundarijal
Distance: 15 km | Elevation: 1,400m to 1,600m | Difficulty: Moderate | Time: 2u20133 hours
This trail follows the northern edge of the valley from the reclining Vishnu statue at Budhanilkantha to the waterfalls at Sundarijal. The route passes through Shivapuri National Park buffer zone on a mix of dirt road and forest track. Sundarijal is the starting point for the Helambu trek, so you will see trekkers with big packs as you arrive. The waterfall area is a good place to cool off before riding back.
Highlights: Budhanilkantha temple, forest riding, Sundarijal waterfall.
Bike Rental in Kathmandu
Several shops in Thamel and Jhamsikhel rent quality hardtail and full-suspension mountain bikes. Expect to pay $10u201315 per day for a basic hardtail and $20u201325 per day for a full-suspension bike with disc brakes. Most shops include a helmet, pump, and basic repair kit. Check the brakes and tyre pressure before you leave u2014 not all rental bikes are well maintained.
Recommended shops include Dawn Till Dusk in Jhamsikhel and Didi Bahini Bike Shop near Boudhanath. Both stock quality bikes and can arrange guided rides.
Guided Tour vs Self-Guided
For trails 1, 4, 7, and 8, self-guided riding works well u2014 the routes are straightforward, well-trafficked, and close to roads if something goes wrong. For trails 2, 3, 5, and 6, a local guide is worth the cost. The trails are less marked, the climbs are serious, and a guide knows where the rideable lines are versus the hike-a-bike sections.
Our Kathmandu Mountain Bike Tour includes a certified guide, mechanic, quality bikes, vehicle support for luggage, and all permits. It covers the best trails over five days with comfortable lodge accommodation each night.
What to Bring
- Helmet u2014 non-negotiable, even on easy trails

- 2u20133 litres of water u2014 refill options are limited on forest trails
- Repair kit u2014 spare tube, tyre levers, multi-tool, pump
- Sun protection u2014 sunscreen, sunglasses, cap under helmet

- Snacks u2014 energy bars, nuts, dried fruit

Best Months for Riding
The two prime windows are October to November and February to April. October and November offer the clearest mountain views and dry trails after the monsoon. February to April brings warmer temperatures and wildflowers, though March can be hazy. December and January are rideable but cold on early morning starts. Avoid June to September entirely u2014 the monsoon turns trails to mud and leeches appear in the forest.
