Can older trekkers and families do Everest Base Camp? The 14-day route, what changes from the 12-day trek, the cost for every group size, and who it does not suit.

Last updated 15 October 2026.

Short answer: Yes, older trekkers and families with teenagers can do Everest Base Camp, if they are healthy, trained and go slowly. Our Everest Base Camp trek for seniors and families takes 14 days from Kathmandu to Kathmandu and costs from USD 1,710 per person (Budget, two to four people), USD 2,920 on Standard and USD 5,835 on Luxury. It climbs exactly like our 12-day trek, with two rest days at Namche and Dingboche, but the walk down is split into four shorter days and there is a spare day at Lukla for the flight. There is no age limit in Nepal, I decide case by case for older trekkers, and I do not take children under 14.

I am Shreejan. Every year I get emails from a daughter booking for her parents, from a couple who are both over sixty, and from a father with two teenage sons. They all ask the same thing: can we do Everest Base Camp without being rushed? This page is my answer, using the live itinerary and prices as I read them on 15 October 2026.

What is the 14-day Everest Base Camp trek for seniors and families?

It is the 12-day Everest Base Camp trek with two changes. The walk down is split into shorter days, and there is a spare day at Lukla in case the flight is held. Nothing is taken away from the way up.

So it is not a lower or easier mountain. It is the same mountain with more room on the way home. The package page calls it strenuous, and I agree. The evenings are cold and the longest days are five to eight hours.

In the busy weeks the flights leave from Manthali (Ramechhap) instead of Kathmandu, and we include the road transfer. My guide to Ramechhap versus Lukla explains which airport to expect, and the day-by-day itinerary has the walking detail.

Is there an age limit for Everest Base Camp, and can older trekkers do it?

There is no age limit, either minimum or maximum, set by Nepal for this trek. What decides it is your health, your fitness and how slowly you go up. My own rule is that I do not take children under 14, and for older trekkers I have no cut-off. I look at each person, case by case. I have written about the evidence and where the line really sits in my Everest Base Camp age limit guide, and about routes for the over-sixties in Nepal trekking over 60 and trekking in Nepal over 50.

With age, what changes is mostly not the altitude. An older body often needs a second night to recover, and knees take the strain on the descent, especially the last day from Namche to Lukla (21 km). That is why I split the way down, and why I tell people to bring poles and practise walking downhill.

Please see your own doctor before you book, whatever your age. Tell me about any heart, lung, blood-pressure or joint condition. For some conditions the honest answer may be a firm no. A doctor makes that call, not a guide.

Does the slower route make the altitude safer?

Not on the way up, and I would be misleading you if I said so. The climb to Gorak Shep is the same as on the 12-day trek, with the same two rest days. What the extra days give you is time to come down gently and a buffer for the Lukla flight, which is often held by cloud or wind.

Altitude can affect anyone, whatever their age or fitness, and the biggest factor is how fast you go up. Each day your guide takes everyone's oxygen reading with a pulse oximeter. A low reading or any symptoms means no more height, and if things worsen the group goes down. The rest days are not optional. I cannot promise that every person who sets out reaches Base Camp, and nobody honest can. The EBC altitude profile shows where people struggle and why.

Can teenagers and children do the Everest Base Camp trek?

Fit teenagers aged 14 and over who are used to walking are welcome. I do not take children under 14 to Everest Base Camp, and the age limit guide explains why. Children pay the adult price.

If you have younger children and want the Everest region, tell me. I can suggest a shorter, lower trek that shows the same mountains, such as our 7-day Everest View Trek, which starts from USD 1,565 per person (Budget, two to four people). I compare it with the 5-day version in my Everest View Trek guide. For a trip with no trekking, see my 10-day family itinerary, and for the wider picture trekking in Nepal with kids and grandparents.

How much does the 14-day Everest Base Camp trek cost for seniors and families?

Prices are per person, with no difference between private and group. I took these from the live package page on 15 October 2026, and the page says they hold for 2027.

Group sizeBudgetStandardLuxury
1 guest (solo)USD 2,465USD 3,115USD 5,835
2 to 4 guestsUSD 1,710USD 2,920USD 5,835
5 to 8 guestsUSD 1,520USD 2,860USD 5,775
9 to 12 guestsUSD 1,400USD 2,800USD 5,720
13 to 20 guestsUSD 1,225USD 2,745USD 5,660

For two to four guests, the extra two days and the split descent cost USD 311 more on Budget, USD 421 more on Standard and USD 836 more on Luxury than the 12-day Everest Base Camp trek (USD 1,399, USD 2,499 and USD 4,999). That is the price of the buffer. My full breakdown of what the Everest region costs is in the Everest Base Camp cost guide.

The three tiers walk the same route on the same days. Budget means shared rooms, no porter (you carry your own pack) and trail meals paid by you. Standard means private twin rooms, three meals a day and one porter between two trekkers, 20 kg each at most; if you are alone on Standard there is no porter and the guide takes up to 10 kg of your kit. Luxury means a dedicated porter for each of you, deluxe private rooms, all meals plus fruit, nuts and soft drinks whenever you want them, and helicopter flights both ways between Kathmandu and Lukla on a shared seat. Add a porter to any tier for USD 25 a day, plus 13 per cent VAT and the 3.5 per cent bank charge.

For many older trekkers the porter question matters more than the room. If your bag is heavy, or your knees are not what they were, I would not take Budget. Standard with a porter, or Luxury, is where I would look.

You pay separately for your international flights, Kathmandu hotel nights, insurance, tips, spending money and the Nepal visa (USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days, in cash on arrival).

When is the best time to do Everest Base Camp in 2027?

Rain below is the published average for Lukla, so treat it as a guide.

MonthWhat it is likeMy verdict
January to FebruaryColdest. Strong wind high up, some lodges shut above Dingboche. Lukla 15 to 17 mm of rainOnly with winter experience
MarchCold early, warming through the month. Lukla 45.3 mmGood, with a warm sleeping bag
AprilWarm days, busy. Lukla 58.7 mm. May is warmer and hazier (127.6 mm)Best, with early May
June to AugustMonsoon, with flights held up oftenNo
SeptemberMonsoon easing but still wetLast week only, with spare days
OctoberFirst properly dry month, clear and cold. Lukla 102.9 mm. Very busyBest, with November
NovemberAlmost no rain: Lukla 6.2 mm. Clear and colderBest, with October
DecemberDry and very cold. Lukla 0.5 mmOnly with care

For 2027 I would aim for mid October to mid November, with late March to April second. Dashain is expected around 6 to 10 October and Tihar around 29 to 31 October, but the government confirms dates yearly, so avoid the Dashain days. Manthali flights run from about 15 March to 15 May and 25 September to 30 November, and in those weeks I also want two spare days before your flight home. The view of Everest itself comes from Kala Patthar, not from Base Camp.

What permits do you need for Everest Base Camp?

Three permits cover the route. The national park entry is NPR 3,000 (NPR 1,500 for SAARC citizens), the local municipality fee is NPR 3,000, and the TIMS card is NPR 2,000 (NPR 1,000 for SAARC). We buy all three and the cost is already in your price.

What insurance do you need?

Buy your policy before you leave home. It must cover trekking to 6,000 m and helicopter evacuation, and I advise against cover bought in Nepal. If you travel with parents or grandparents, read the policy for age limits and pre-existing conditions before you pay.

How should you train for this trek?

Start at least three months before you fly. Train with hills, stairs and a loaded pack, and practise going downhill. My Everest Base Camp training programme sets it out week by week. Break in your boots and bring trekking poles.

Questions people ask

Is the Everest Base Camp trek suitable for seniors? It can be, for healthy and trained older trekkers who go slowly. It is graded strenuous, so it is not an easy walk. Talk to your doctor and then to me.

How old is too old for Everest Base Camp? Nepal sets no maximum age, and I have no cut-off. I decide case by case, looking at health, fitness and what your doctor says, not the number on the passport.

Can a 14-year-old do Everest Base Camp? Yes, if fit and used to walking. Fourteen is my minimum age. I do not take children under 14 to Base Camp.

Is the 14-day trek easier than the 12-day trek? The way up is the same, so the altitude is the same. The way down is easier on legs and knees because it is split into four days, and the spare day at Lukla takes pressure off the flight.

What happens if someone gets altitude sickness? Your guide takes an oxygen reading every day. If it is low, or symptoms show, we stop climbing, and if the person gets worse we descend.

Is a helicopter included? Only on Luxury, between Kathmandu and Lukla both ways on a shared seat. Budget and Standard use fixed-wing flights.

What are the terms for this trek?

Group size is 1 to 20, and you can also trek solo. The deposit is 10 per cent and it is non-refundable, with no refund if you cancel. You can reschedule free of charge with at least 72 hours notice to any date within one year. The balance is paid on arrival in Kathmandu in USD or EUR, cash or by card. Card carries 3.5 per cent and cash in Kathmandu carries none. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign clients.
