Guide to the EBC trek in May. Weather by week, monsoon timing, base camp during climbing season, and why early May is your last comfortable window before the rains.

Is May a Good Month for the EBC Trek?

May is the last month of spring season and the final window before monsoon arrives. The first three weeks are trekable — warmer than any other month, with long daylight hours and rhododendrons in full bloom. But the monsoon is approaching, and May weather is less predictable than March or April. Cloud builds earlier in the day, visibility drops in the afternoons, and there is a real chance of rain above 4,000m by late May.

If you missed the October-November and March-April windows, early May is your last chance for a comfortable EBC trek before the season closes. It works, but you need to go in with the right expectations.

What Is the Weather Like?

Lukla to Namche (2,840-3,440m): Warm and increasingly humid. Daytime 18 to 25°C. The forests are lush and green, rhododendrons are at peak bloom at higher elevations (they bloom later than at lower altitudes). Morning cloud is more common than in April, but skies usually clear by mid-morning.

Namche to Dingboche (3,440-4,410m): Daytime 10 to 18°C. Afternoons bring cloud build-up from around 1pm, reducing mountain visibility. Morning views are still excellent — plan your photography before 10am. Light rain or snow flurries are possible, especially in late May.

Lobuche to Gorak Shep (4,940-5,164m): Daytime 2 to 10°C. Nights -8 to -15°C. Warmer overnight than any other month, which means sleeping at Gorak Shep is less punishing. But afternoon cloud at this elevation can be thick, sometimes obscuring the peaks entirely by 2pm.

Kala Patthar (5,545m): Sunrise is your moment. Before 7am, the sky is usually clear and the views are sharp. After that, cloud rolls in. The May sunrise at Kala Patthar can be stunning — warm golden light on Everest with a layer of cloud filling the valleys below. When it works, it is one of the most dramatic viewpoints in the Himalayas.

How Crowded Is May?

Less crowded than April but still busier than November or March. Many trekkers have finished by late April, so the trail thins noticeably after the first week of May. By mid-May, you are walking with a fraction of the April crowd.

Everest climbers are on the mountain in May — this is summit season. You may see base camp bustling with expedition teams, which adds an exciting dimension that other months do not have. The colourful tents, the Khumbu Icefall route, and the energy of summit attempts make a May visit to base camp feel different from autumn.

When Does the Monsoon Start?

The monsoon typically reaches Nepal between June 1st and June 10th. It does not arrive suddenly — there is a gradual build-up through late May with increasing afternoon cloud, occasional rain showers, and higher humidity. The transition feels like the weather is testing the waters before committing.

For trekking purposes, the window closes around May 20th to 25th. After that, conditions become unreliable — sustained rain at lower elevations, snow above 4,500m, and leeches appearing on the lower trails. If you are planning a May trek, start before May 10th to give yourself a comfortable buffer.

What Should You Pack?

May packing is unusual because you need both warm layers for altitude AND rain protection for the lower trail.

The warm layers: down jacket (we provide one free), thermal base layers, fleece, warm hat and gloves. These are the same as any other month — altitude cold does not take a month off.

The May additions: a reliable waterproof jacket (not just water-resistant — properly waterproof with taped seams), a waterproof pack cover, and quick-drying trekking clothes. If it rains between Lukla and Namche, you want gear that handles it.

We provide a free duffel bag and down jacket. Full list in our EBC packing guide.

What Is Base Camp Like in May?

May is climbing season, and EBC is at its most active. Expedition teams occupy the tent city that covers the glacier, with Sherpa teams running loads through the Khumbu Icefall every morning before dawn. If you arrive at base camp in May, you see the operational side of Everest that does not exist during trekking season.

Some expedition teams welcome trekkers into their camps for tea and conversation. This is not guaranteed — respect their space and their schedule — but when it happens, hearing climbers talk about their summit attempts from inside base camp is an experience unique to May.

Should You Choose May or Wait for October?

If your schedule allows October, wait. October has more reliable weather, better all-day visibility, and drier trails. May is a compromise month — good but not optimal.

But if May is your only option, go. Early May (before the 15th) offers perfectly good conditions. The trail is quieter, the temperatures are comfortable, and the morning views are excellent. You just need to accept that afternoons may be cloudy and that rain is possible.

Ready for a May EBC Trek?

We run May departures through the second week of the month. Early booking recommended — our guides are also supporting climbing expeditions during this period, so availability is tighter than other months.

WhatsApp us for May availability or to ask about current pre-monsoon conditions. Our team is on the ground in the Khumbu and can tell you exactly what to expect this week.
