Briddim: The Tamang Village on Day 5 of the Tamang Heritage Trail and How Our Trek Reaches It
Briddim is where our 12-day Tamang Heritage Trail spends its fifth night, in a local home, after a long day along the old trade route toward Tibet. There is very little reliable writing about it in English, so this page sets out what our own itinerary says, what I could check in outside sources, and the places where I could not confirm something and have left it out.
Where is Briddim and who lives there?
Our itinerary describes Briddim as a Tamang village influenced by Tibetan culture, at 2,230 metres. It is in Rasuwa District, in the north of Nepal's Bagmati region. Wikipedia's Rasuwa District page lists a former village development committee under the spelling Briddhim, and in its list of attractions it names a "Tamang village in Bridim", so you will see the name written at least three ways. We use Briddim.
The Tamang are the main community of the district. Wikipedia, quoting the 2021 census, gives Rasuwa 46,689 people, of whom 68.8 per cent are Tamang, with 67.5 per cent speaking Tamang as their first language. It also says the northern parts of the district largely fall inside Langtang National Park. I could not find a source I trust for Briddim's own population, so I give none.
Which day of the Tamang Heritage Trail do you reach Briddim?
Day 5 of our 12-day Tamang Heritage Trail trek. These are the days around it, copied from our day-by-day plan. Distances and hours are ours, and heights are the ones in our itinerary.
| Day | Route | Distance | Walking | Sleep |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 4 | Tatopani to Thuman via Nagthali | 9.2 km | 6 hours | 2,340 m |
| 5 | Thuman to Briddim | 14 km | 5 to 6 hours | 2,230 m |
| 6 | Briddim to Lama Hotel | 13 km | 6 hours | 2,470 m |
| 7 | Lama Hotel to Langtang village | 14.8 km | 6 hours | 3,430 m |
Day 1 is the drive from Kathmandu to Syabrubesi, and the route reaches Kyanjin Gompa on day 8, returning to Syabrubesi on day 11 before the drive back to Kathmandu on day 12. The earlier days are covered in our guide to Gatlang, and the starting village in our guide to Syabrubesi.
What is the walk from Thuman to Briddim like?
It is the longest day on this part of the route, at 14 kilometres and five to six hours by our itinerary. It follows the old trade route to Tibet, crosses the Bhote Koshi River and winds through valleys and forested slopes. The first section is relatively flat, which is a kind start after the climb over Nagthali the day before. The trail then descends towards Timure, where we stop for lunch.
After lunch the itinerary says the path climbs steeply to Briddim. That is the honest trade-off of the day: a gentle morning and a hard afternoon, when your legs are already tired. Our figures put Thuman at 2,340 metres and Briddim at 2,230 metres, so the day ends lower than it began, but the final climb will not feel like it. I would rather you know that than discover it at 3 pm.
What is it like to stay in Briddim?
Our itinerary says you stay in a local home, for what it calls a traditionally unique experience. Our package lists tea houses or local lodges, with breakfast, lunch and dinner included in Standard and Luxury. That is all I will claim. I have not found a source I trust for the name or age of any monastery in Briddim, for crafts, for festival dates, or for how many homes take guests, and I do not want to invent any of it for you to plan around.
What I can tell you is how to behave. Ask your guide which way to walk round each mani wall and chorten, ask before photographing anyone or anything inside a prayer hall, and treat what your hosts tell you through the guide as the real source. Mobile signal can be patchy, and our package says our lead guide stays in daily contact with all trekking teams.
Can you visit Rasuwagadhi from Briddim?
Our itinerary says the historic Rasuwagadhi fort, which marks the Nepal and Tibet border, can be visited after a short three-hour walk from near Timure. Wikipedia, which calls it Rasuwa Fort, says it was built in 1855, that there was a three-day battle in the area in July 1792, and that the crossing opened for trade in December 2014. Three hours is a long extra walk on top of a 14-kilometre day, so if you want it, ask us before you book and we will tell you honestly whether it fits.
What is the walk from Briddim to Lama Hotel like?
Day 6 is 13 kilometres and about six hours, ending at Lama Hotel at 2,470 metres, which is 240 metres above Briddim. Our itinerary describes small Tamang settlements, terraced farmland, and forests of birch and bamboo, then a small settlement called Bamboo beside the Langtang River and onwards to Rimche. It adds prayer flags, mani walls and wooden buildings along the way. From here the route has joined the Langtang valley, and day 7 climbs to Langtang village at 3,430 metres. Our Langtang Valley guide covers what comes next.
Can you do the Tamang Heritage Trail after the August 2026 flood?
I am not going to give you a status here, because it would be out of date within days. A flood came down the Bhote Koshi on 26 August 2026, and our own flood page says the Thuman and Briddim section sits in the country closest to Timure, where the damage was. Our flood pages are updated as the position changes: Is the Langtang trek affected by the Rasuwa flood?, which treks in Nepal are open after the flood, and Langtang in November and December. Read those first, and message me with your dates before you pay anything.
What permits do you need for Briddim?
The route is inside Langtang National Park. The Nepal Tourism Board's park fee page lists Langtang at NPR 3,000 per person per entry for foreigners, with children under 10 free. A licensed guide and agency-issued TIMS card are required on most trekking routes under the Nepal Tourism Board rule from 31 March 2023; the Everest (Khumbu) region does not enforce it locally, but we always trek with a licensed guide. The Tourism Board's TIMS page lists the Tamang Heritage Trek among the routes covered, and gives the TIMS fee as NPR 2,000 for non-SAARC visitors.
Our package includes the Langtang National Park permit and the TIMS card in every tier. One more point I want to be honest about: the Department of Immigration lists a restricted area permit for part of northern Rasuwa. I have not confirmed whether our route touches it, and our package does not name it, so I state no figure. If any other permit applies to your dates, we will tell you before you pay a deposit, and permits need at least 48 hours in government working days, so we ask for your passport details early.
How much does the Tamang Heritage Trail cost?
Our current prices for the 12-day trek, per person, are USD 725 Budget, USD 999 Standard and USD 1,999 Luxury, for one traveller or more, and groups of two to twenty are welcome. Budget does not include meals or a porter, and trekkers carry their own bags. Standard includes all meals and one porter for every two trekkers, so a solo traveller on Standard has the guide carry up to 10 kg instead. Luxury includes all meals with fruit, nuts and soft drinks, and a dedicated porter for each trekker. Kathmandu hotels are not included in any trek tier. We recommend budgeting about USD 20 a day for extras on the trail.
Our deposit is 10 per cent, and the rest is paid in Kathmandu in US dollar cash or by card, with a 3.5 per cent charge on card payments. If you cancel, the deposit is not refunded, but you can reschedule free of charge with at least 72 hours' notice to any date in the following year.
When is the best time to visit Briddim?
Our package names autumn, September to November, as the most popular season, with stable weather, clear views most days, daytime temperatures of 10 to 18 degrees Celsius and nights between minus 3 and 5. Spring, March to May, is described as clear and warm at 10 to 20 degrees, with rhododendrons in bloom. Monsoon is wet and the trails are slippery, and winter is cold, with snow higher up and far fewer trekkers. These are our own seasonal notes, not a measured record for Briddim. Book early for the Dashain weeks if you want the autumn window: see our Dashain guide.
Is the Briddim section hard, and who is it for?
Our package grades the trek Moderate. Briddim itself is at 2,230 metres, so altitude is not the issue on this part of the route. The challenge is the length of the days and the steep afternoon climb on day 5. Our package says travel insurance is required and must cover emergency helicopter rescue up to 6,000 metres. Buy it before you leave home: see our insurance guide. Every package includes first aid and an oximeter.
If you want hotel-style comfort every night, this is not that kind of trek.
The short version
Briddim is a Tamang village in Rasuwa District at 2,230 metres on our itinerary, reached on day 5 of our 12-day Tamang Heritage Trail after a 14-kilometre walk from Thuman, with a steep climb at the end. Park permit and TIMS are included, a licensed guide is required and provided, and some details, such as monastery names, festival dates and the exact permit position, I could not confirm, so I have not made them up. To talk through whether this route suits you, or what the flood position is for your dates, message me on WhatsApp on +977 9810351300.
