Annapurna Base Camp Trek in April 2027: Weather, Flowers, Crowds and Snow
Updated 28 October 2026.
Short answer: April is a good month for the Annapurna Base Camp trek, and the second best after October and November. Nights at base camp (4,130 m) are typically about minus 5 C, warmer than March (minus 9 C). Pokhara gets 141.7 mm of rain in April against 63.7 mm in March, so expect cloud building from late morning and a shower now and then. Rhododendrons flower in the forest between Ghandruk and Chomrong. Our 9-day trek costs USD 725 Budget, USD 1,310 Standard and USD 2,095 Luxury per person for two to four people.
I am Shreejan. We already have blogs on spring as a whole and on the best months of the year for this trek. Here I only want to talk about April 2027: what changes against March and May, what the snow on the Deurali side means, and what to do about booking.

Pokhara figures are the 1991 to 2020 normals (World Meteorological Organization; sunshine from the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology and FAO). Lumle rain is the Department of Hydrology and Meteorology 1991 to 2020 average. The Chomrong, Deurali and base camp temperatures are typical values for 2015 to 2024 that we use on our package page. They are a guide, not a forecast for any day in 2027.
What is the weather at Annapurna Base Camp in April?
Milder than March, and wetter. The typical night low at base camp rises from minus 9 C in March to minus 5 C in April. At Deurali it goes from minus 3 C to 1 C. That is the main reason people prefer April if they feel the cold.
The price of the warmth is moisture. Pokhara rain more than doubles, from 63.7 mm in March to 141.7 mm in April. At base camp the modelled figure is 96 mm over about 20 wet days, against 73 mm over 11 in March. A wet day here means 1 mm or more, and most of those showers come in the afternoon. Sunshine in Pokhara is still high, 219.0 hours in April and 229.4 in March.
What I see on the trail matches the numbers. Mornings are usually the clear part of the day. By late morning the cloud climbs the valley, and by afternoon the peaks may be hidden. This is why the walk to Annapurna Base Camp from Machhapuchhre Base Camp starts early.
Is April or March better for Annapurna Base Camp?
| Month | Pokhara rain | Base camp night low | On the trail |
|---|---|---|---|
| March | 63.7 mm | minus 9 C | Drier and clearer, but cold at Deurali and base camp, with more snow on the upper trail |
| April | 141.7 mm | minus 5 C | Warmer nights, rhododendrons in flower, more afternoon cloud |
| May | 354.7 mm | minus 1 C | Warm, but 25 wet days at base camp and sunshine down to 167.4 hours. The least reliable month for views |
If you hate cold nights, April. If views matter more than comfort, March. If your only free weeks are in May, read the spring post first and keep a spare day.
When do the rhododendrons flower on the Annapurna Base Camp trek?
There is no published guide that gives flowering by height and date, so I will tell you what our guides see and call it that. The flowers move uphill as spring goes on. Below Ghandruk (1,940 m) they come first, in March. In the forest between Ghandruk and Chomrong (2,170 m) they are at their best from late March into the first half of April. Above Chomrong the bushes are smaller and open later in April.
A cold, late spring can push all of this back by a week or more. For flowers, the first two or three weeks of April are what I would aim for. Ask me closer to your dates and I will tell you what the guides have seen that month.
One thing about the route. Our ABC trek goes Nayapul, Ghandruk, Chomrong. The famous flower trail between Ghorepani and Tadapani is on the Poon Hill side, and it is not on this plan. If that forest is what you want, the Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill trek adds it, and the Poon Hill in spring blog covers that forest in April.
Is the trail crowded in April?
Busier than March, quieter than October and November. I do not have a published count of trekkers for April, so I will not give a number. Several other operators say the same about the order of the seasons, and it matches my own guiding.
Nepali New Year, Baisakh 1, 2084, falls on Wednesday 14 April 2027 by the Kathmandu calendars I checked. It is a public holiday. Plan a spare night in Kathmandu around it rather than a tight same-day connection.
What about haze and afternoon cloud in April?
I can give you the pattern, not a figure, because I have no haze measurement for the trail. In my experience the air is clearest in the first half of April, and it gets softer and hazier towards the end of the month as the pre-monsoon moisture builds. The cloud is the bigger problem. Plan to be on the move at first light, and treat a clear afternoon at the sanctuary as a bonus.
Is there avalanche danger on the ABC trail in April?
Yes, a smaller one than in winter, and it sits on one stretch. The section between Hinku Cave and Deurali (3,174 m) is the one people talk about. Our day 4 is Chomrong to Deurali, a 7-hour walk.
Two dated sources I trust. On 17 January 2020 an avalanche hit that stretch and seven people were lost, four South Korean trekkers and three Nepali guides, as the Kathmandu Post reported on 14 February 2020. The route was closed for about a month and the lodges reopened afterwards. In an article of 3 September 2024, Online Khabar calls Hinku Cave to Deurali one of the most dangerous parts of the trek and says winter is the most hazardous time. It also says the risk continues in spring, especially in March or early April, before the thin snow cover has gone.
There is no official avalanche calendar for this trail, so nobody can give you a safe date. What I can say is what we do. The guide watches the snow and the weather and decides whether to cross that stretch, and he sets the pace. If it has snowed heavily in the days before, we wait or turn back. Keep a spare day in your plan for that. By late April the snow is usually thin, but I would not promise it, because one cold spell can undo it.
What should I pack for Annapurna Base Camp in April?
Pack for four seasons in nine days. Nayapul and Pokhara are hot (Pokhara's April mean high is 30.0 C), and the base camp night is near minus 5 C.
- A warm down jacket and a warm hat for Deurali and base camp
- A light waterproof jacket and a pack cover, for the afternoon showers
- Sun hat, sunglasses and sunscreen. The sun is strong on the stone steps below 2,500 m
- Trekking poles for the long steps down to Bamboo and Jhinu Danda
- A sleeping bag rated to about minus 10 C if you want your own. Teahouses give blankets, but nights above Deurali are cold
- Light layers for the heat at the start
The full list is in the Annapurna Base Camp packing list. Weight rules are simple. Porters carry 20 kg at most by law. On Standard one porter takes two trekkers, so your bag is 10 kg. On Luxury you have your own porter, with up to 20 kg. Budget has no porter. If you travel solo on Standard, your guide carries up to 10 kg of your bag.
Getting there and what it costs
The plan is on the Annapurna Base Camp trek, 9 days. Day 1 is the drive from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Day 2 is Nayapul and the walk to Ghandruk (1,940 m). Day 3 is Chomrong (2,170 m). Day 4 is Deurali (3,174 m). Day 5 is base camp (4,130 m) via Machhapuchhre Base Camp. Day 6 is down to Bamboo (2,310 m), day 7 to Jhinu Danda (1,780 m), day 8 back to Nayapul and Pokhara, and day 9 the drive to Kathmandu.
| Group size | Budget | Standard | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 person | USD 1,250 | USD 1,725 | USD 3,465 |
| 2 to 4 people | USD 725 | USD 1,310 | USD 2,095 |
Per person, as shown on the package page on 28 October 2026. Kathmandu hotels are not in the trek price. The permits are ACAP NPR 3,000 and TIMS NPR 2,000 (Nepal Tourism Board: ntb.gov.np/plan-your-trip/before-you-come/park-entry-fees). Allow about USD 20 a day for your own extras. Buy travel insurance at home that covers trekking to 4,500 m and helicopter rescue. Foreign guests pay in USD or EUR. A card payment of the balance carries 3.5%, and cash in Kathmandu does not.
When should I book the ABC trek for April 2027?
The deposit is 10% and you pay the balance in Kathmandu. We arrange the lodges. I cannot show you a published list of which lodges are full on which date, so I will not claim one. In my experience the first half of April is the tightest, and the sanctuary lodges fill before the lower villages. If you have fixed dates, especially around 14 April, tell me early and I will secure the nights. Once you book, your departure runs on your dates, even for one guest. For group dates, see the group trek dates post.
How hard is the ABC trek in April?
Moderate, with no technical climbing. Walking days are 5 to 7 hours, and the hardest is day 4 to Deurali. Altitude is the real test, since you sleep at 4,130 m. I go through the daily detail in how difficult is Annapurna Base Camp, and altitude sickness prevention covers the rest.
Frequently asked questions
Is April a good time to trek to Annapurna Base Camp?
Yes. It is second to October and November. You get warmer nights than March, flowers in the forest and long days. The trade-off is afternoon cloud and some showers.
How cold is Annapurna Base Camp in April?
The typical night low is about minus 5 C and the day high about 2 C. Deurali is about 1 C at night. Wind and a clear sky can make it feel colder.
Will it rain on the ABC trek in April?
Probably a shower or two. Base camp has about 20 wet days in the modelled data for April, and Pokhara gets 141.7 mm. Most showers come in the afternoon. Higher up, rain can fall as snow.
Are the rhododendrons in bloom in April?
Mostly yes in the forest between Ghandruk and Chomrong, peaking from late March to the first half of April by what our guides see. Lower down they finish first. The Ghorepani to Tadapani forest is on the Poon Hill route, not our standard ABC plan.
Is there an avalanche risk on the ABC trek in April?
There can be, mainly between Hinku Cave and Deurali, and mostly in March or early April while old snow remains (Online Khabar, 3 September 2024). There is no official calendar, so the guide decides on the day.
Is the ABC trail crowded in April?
Busier than March and quieter than October and November. I have no published trekker count to back a number.
How far ahead should I book an April 2027 trek?
As soon as your dates are fixed. The first half of April is the tightest in my experience. The deposit is 10%.
Do I need a guide on the ABC trek?
We always walk with a licensed guide, and the TIMS card is arranged through us. On the Deurali stretch his judgement on the snow is the reason I want him there.
