Why Spanish Trekkers Are Booking Direct with a Nepali Family Company
If you've walked the Camino de Santiago, you already know the pull of a long trail. The rhythm of your boots on ancient stone, the silence of early mornings, the quiet satisfaction of arriving somewhere under your own power. Nepal takes that feeling and multiplies it by a thousand.
The Himalayas are not the Pyrenees. The scale is different, the altitude is different, and the logistics are more complex. But the spirit is the same: walk, breathe, be humbled by something bigger than yourself. And if you book through a European agency in Madrid or Barcelona, you'll pay European prices for a trek that's run entirely by a Nepali company on the ground.
Book directly with The Everest Holiday and you'll pay 40-60% less for the same trails, same lodges, and better guides. We are the source.

Getting to Kathmandu from Spain
There are no direct flights from Spain to Nepal. The most common routes from Madrid and Barcelona connect through Doha or Istanbul, with excellent one-stop options that keep total travel time under 15 hours.
| From | Via | Airlines | Total Time | Cost (Return, EUR) |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Madrid (MAD) | Doha (DOH) | Qatar Airways | 13-15 hrs | EUR 550-900 |
| Madrid (MAD) | Istanbul (IST) | Turkish Airlines | 13-16 hrs | EUR 500-850 |
| Barcelona (BCN) | Doha (DOH) | Qatar Airways | 13-15 hrs | EUR 550-900 |
| Barcelona (BCN) | Istanbul (IST) | Turkish Airlines | 13-16 hrs | EUR 500-850 |
| Madrid (MAD) | Abu Dhabi (AUH) | Etihad Airways | 14-17 hrs | EUR 500-800 |
Pro tip: Book 2-3 months ahead for the best fares. Qatar Airways via Doha is the most popular route with Spanish trekkers due to reliable connections and generous baggage allowances. Turkish Airlines via Istanbul is often the cheapest option.
Visa Information for Spanish Citizens
Spanish citizens need a tourist visa to enter Nepal. The easiest option is the visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport in Kathmandu.
- 15 days: USD 30 (approximately EUR 28)
- 30 days: USD 50 (approximately EUR 46)
- 90 days: USD 125 (approximately EUR 115)
Bring your passport (valid for at least 6 months), one passport-size photo, and cash in USD or EUR. The process takes 15-30 minutes at the airport. You can also apply online at nepaliport.immigration.gov.np before your trip to save time on arrival.
Best Months to Trek from Spain
- October-November: The best weather window. Clear skies, stable temperatures, spectacular mountain views. This is peak season, so book early. Perfect for Everest Base Camp and Annapurna.
- March-May: Spring brings warmer temperatures and rhododendron forests in full bloom. Slightly more cloud in the afternoons but excellent trekking conditions. Great for Langtang and Poon Hill.
- December-February: Cold but clear at lower altitudes. Fewer crowds, lower prices. Good for Poon Hill and Mardi Himal. Not recommended for Everest Base Camp or Manaslu unless you are experienced in cold conditions.
- June-September (Monsoon): Avoid for most treks. Exception: Upper Mustang and Dolpo, which sit in a rain shadow area.
For Spanish professionals: The October-November window aligns well with the autumn puente holidays. Combine a public holiday with annual leave for a 10-14 day trek without using too many holiday days.
From the Camino to the Himalayas: What to Expect
If you've completed any of the Camino routes, you already have the fitness base and mental resilience for Himalayan trekking. But there are key differences worth understanding.
- Altitude is the big change. The Camino tops out at around 1,500m (O Cebreiro). Everest Base Camp sits at 5,364m. Your body reacts differently above 3,000m, and our itineraries include acclimatisation days to keep you safe.
- Teahouse accommodation. Like albergues on the Camino, but simpler. Basic twin rooms, shared bathrooms, warm blankets. Standard and Luxury tiers get you the best available rooms and private facilities where they exist.
- You carry less. On the Camino you carry your own pack. In Nepal, your porter carries up to 15kg of your gear. You walk with just a daypack.
- The food is hearty. Dal bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables) is the staple. Unlimited refills at most teahouses. Momos (dumplings), noodle soups, and Tibetan bread are also available. Vegetarian options everywhere.
- You have a guide. Since 2023, Nepal law requires all trekkers to have a licensed guide. Our guides are government-trained, carry pulse oximeters, and know the trails intimately.

What Spanish Trekkers Need to Know
Permits
All trekking permits are included in our package price. You need: TIMS card (Trekkers' Information Management System) plus National Park or Conservation Area entry permit. For restricted areas (Manaslu, Upper Mustang, Dolpo), a special restricted area permit is required. We handle everything.
Currency
Nepal uses Nepali Rupees (NPR). You can exchange Euros at the airport or in Kathmandu's Thamel district. ATMs in Kathmandu and Pokhara accept European bank cards (Visa and Mastercard). Carry cash for the trail as there are no ATMs above Namche Bazaar (Everest region) or Chame (Annapurna region). Budget approximately EUR 10-15 per day for personal expenses on the trail.
Mobile and Internet
Buy an NCell SIM card at Kathmandu airport (approximately EUR 5 with data pack). It works on most of the trail up to Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. Your Spanish SIM will not work without international roaming, which is expensive. Wi-Fi is available at most teahouses for NPR 200-500 per session.
Language
Our guides speak English fluently. While Spanish is not commonly spoken in Nepal, you will have no communication difficulties with your guide and in tourist areas of Kathmandu and Pokhara. A few words of Nepali go a long way: "Namaste" (hello), "Dhanyabad" (thank you).
Altitude Sickness
This is the biggest risk for all trekkers. Madrid sits at 667m above sea level. Everest Base Camp is 5,364m. Your body needs time to adjust, and fitness alone does not prevent altitude sickness. Our guides carry pulse oximeters and monitor your oxygen levels daily. We build acclimatisation days into every itinerary. If symptoms appear, we descend immediately.
Insurance
Travel insurance with helicopter evacuation cover is mandatory for all trekkers. Spanish providers like Mapfre, Intermundial, and IATI Seguros offer adventure travel policies. Check that your policy covers trekking above 5,000m and helicopter rescue. Cost: approximately EUR 50-100 for two weeks. We require confirmation before departure.

Frequently Asked Questions — Spanish Trekkers
Do Spanish citizens need a visa for Nepal?
Yes. You can get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport. Bring your passport (valid 6+ months), one photo, and USD 30-50 in cash depending on duration. The process takes 15-30 minutes. You can also apply online before your trip.
Do I need a guide to trek in Nepal?
Yes. Since 2023, Nepal law requires all trekkers to have a licensed guide. Our guides are Nepal government trained and licensed, and several hold Bachelor's degrees in Mountaineering.
What is the best route from Spain to Nepal?
The most popular routes fly from Madrid or Barcelona via Doha (Qatar Airways) or Istanbul (Turkish Airlines). Total journey time is 13-16 hours with one stop. Book 2-3 months ahead for fares around EUR 500-700.
How fit do I need to be?
You should be able to walk 5-7 hours daily on hilly terrain. If you've completed the Camino de Santiago or regularly hike in the Sierra Nevada or Picos de Europa, you have a solid base. Start altitude-specific training 8-12 weeks before your trek with stair climbing and cardio. No mountaineering skills needed for standard treks.
Can I trek solo or do I need a group?
All our treks are private. You don't join a group. It's just you, your guide, and your porter. Solo trekkers, couples, families, and friend groups all welcome. Minimum 1 person, maximum 20.
Is the food suitable for my diet?
Dal bhat (rice, lentils, vegetables) is the main trail meal, with unlimited refills. Vegetarian options are available everywhere. Meat dishes (chicken, yak) are available at most stops. The food is filling and nutritious, though different from Spanish cuisine. Carry some snacks from home if you like.
What if I get altitude sickness?
Our guides are trained in altitude sickness prevention and carry pulse oximeters. We monitor your oxygen levels twice daily above 3,000m. If serious symptoms appear, we descend immediately and coordinate helicopter evacuation if needed. Travel insurance with helicopter cover is mandatory.
How do I book?
Choose your trek, pick your tier (Budget/Standard/Luxury), and pay a 10% deposit online through our secure Himalayan Bank payment gateway. The remaining balance is due before your trek starts. Or simply WhatsApp Shreejan directly and we'll plan everything together.
