Lower Mustang gives you the dramatic Kali Gandaki gorge, Muktinath temple, and medieval Kagbeni — all on a motorbike, without the $500 restricted area permit that Upper Mustang demands. Here is the complete route, cost breakdown, and 8-day itinerary for 2026.

What Is the Lower Mustang Motorbike Tour?

Lower Mustang is the accessible half of Nepal's Mustang district. Unlike Upper Mustang, which sits behind a restricted area boundary and requires a $500 permit plus a mandatory guide, Lower Mustang is open to everyone. You ride through the deepest gorge on earth, pass apple orchards and hot springs, and reach the sacred Muktinath temple — all without the paperwork or the price tag of the forbidden kingdom.

This tour follows the Kali Gandaki corridor from Pokhara through Beni, Tatopani, Jomsom, and up to Kagbeni, the gateway village where Lower Mustang ends and the restricted zone begins. The riding is a proper mix of sealed highway and rough mountain track, with river crossings at lower elevations and loose gravel higher up. It is real off-road touring, not a highway cruise.

The Route: Kathmandu to Kagbeni and Back

The full circuit covers roughly 1,100 km over 8 days. Here is how the route breaks down:

  • Kathmandu to Pokhara — 200 km on the Prithvi Highway, following the Trisuli River through river valleys and small towns.
  • Pokhara to Tatopani — 120 km via Beni, dropping into the Kali Gandaki valley. The road gets rougher past Beni.
  • Tatopani to Jomsom — 85 km of mountain track climbing from 1,200 m to 2,720 m. River crossings, loose rock, and narrow cliff sections.
  • Jomsom to Muktinath — 22 km uphill to 3,710 m. The sacred temple sits at the base of the Thorong La pass.
  • Jomsom to Kagbeni — 12 km north. This medieval walled village is where the restricted Upper Mustang zone begins. You can walk around Kagbeni freely but cannot ride north without the permit.
  • Return via the same corridor — back through Marpha, Tatopani, Beni, and Pokhara to Kathmandu.

Day-by-Day Itinerary (8 Days)

Here is the standard 8-day breakdown for our Lower Mustang Motorbike Tour:

  • Day 1: Arrive in Kathmandu. Bike fitting, briefing, and gear check.
  • Day 2: Ride Kathmandu to Pokhara (200 km, 6-7 hours). Sealed highway the entire way.
  • Day 3: Ride Pokhara to Tatopani (120 km, 5-6 hours). Road turns rough after Beni. Soak in the natural hot springs at Tatopani in the evening.
  • Day 4: Ride Tatopani to Jomsom (85 km, 5-6 hours). This is the toughest riding day — river crossings, gravel, and steep climbs through the Kali Gandaki gorge.
  • Day 5: Ride Jomsom to Muktinath (22 km, 1.5 hours). Visit the temple. Ride to Kagbeni (12 km from Jomsom) in the afternoon. Explore the medieval village.
  • Day 6: Ride Kagbeni/Jomsom back to Tatopani (85 km). Stop in Marpha for apple brandy and apple pie — the town is famous for its orchards.
  • Day 7: Ride Tatopani to Pokhara (120 km). Easier riding on the return as you know the road.
  • Day 8: Ride Pokhara to Kathmandu (200 km). Trip ends in Kathmandu.

Lower Mustang vs Upper Mustang: The Key Differences

The most common question we get is whether to do Lower or Upper Mustang. Here is a straight comparison:

  • Permit: Lower Mustang needs only the standard TIMS card and Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (around $50 total). Upper Mustang requires the restricted area permit at $500 for the first 10 days.
  • Duration: Lower Mustang works in 8 days. Upper Mustang needs 12-15 days minimum.
  • Cost: Lower Mustang starts at $719 per person. Upper Mustang starts above $2,000 because of the permit alone.
  • Terrain: Both have rough mountain tracks, but Upper Mustang has more high-altitude desert riding above 3,800 m.
  • Scenery: Lower Mustang gives you the gorge, hot springs, apple orchards, and Muktinath. Upper Mustang gives you the rain shadow desert, Lo Manthang's walled city, and ancient cave monasteries.

If you want the Mustang experience without the cost or time commitment, Lower Mustang is the right choice. If you have two weeks and want the full forbidden kingdom experience, read our Upper Mustang motorbike guide.

How Much Does the Lower Mustang Motorbike Tour Cost?

We run three tiers for the 8-day tour. All prices are per person:

  • Budget: $719 — basic guesthouses, shared rooms, no frills. You still get the full route, a support vehicle, and a guide.
  • Standard: $1,299 — better lodges, private rooms, all meals included. This is what most riders choose.
  • Luxury: $1,899 — best available lodges at each stop, private rooms, all meals, and additional comfort where the route allows it.

All tiers include the motorbike (Royal Enfield Himalayan or similar), fuel, permits, a riding guide, a support vehicle for luggage, and accommodation. For a wider look at motorbike touring costs across Nepal, see our Nepal motorbike tour cost breakdown.

Road Conditions: What to Expect

The Kathmandu-Pokhara stretch is fully sealed highway. Beyond Pokhara, the road quality drops steadily. Past Beni, you are on gravel and dirt track with sections of loose rock. Between Tatopani and Jomsom, expect river crossings (seasonal, worst during monsoon), narrow cliff-edge tracks, and stretches where the road is more suggestion than surface.

The altitude stays manageable. Tatopani sits at 1,200 m, Jomsom at 2,720 m, and Muktinath at 3,710 m. You are unlikely to face serious altitude issues at these heights, though riders coming from sea level should take it steady on the Muktinath day.

Highlights Along the Route

  • Kali Gandaki Gorge: The deepest gorge in the world, measured between the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri massifs. You ride through it for two full days.
  • Tatopani Hot Springs: Natural hot springs right beside the river. After a long riding day, this is exactly what your body needs.
  • Marpha Village: Famous for apple orchards, apple brandy, and apple pie. The whitewashed stone village is one of the prettiest stops on the route.
  • Muktinath Temple: Sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists. The eternal flame burning behind a waterfall is something you will not see anywhere else.
  • Kagbeni: A medieval walled village at the entrance to the restricted zone. Narrow alleys, ancient buildings, and views straight into the Upper Mustang desert.

Best Season to Ride

The Lower Mustang route is rideable from March through November. The best months are:

  • March to May: Spring. Clear skies, warm days, rhododendron blooms at lower elevations. Roads are generally dry.
  • June to August: Monsoon. Lower Mustang sits in the rain shadow of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, so it gets far less rain than the rest of Nepal. River crossings are higher, though, and the Tatopani-Jomsom section gets more challenging.
  • September to November: Autumn. The classic trekking season. Crystal-clear mountain views, dry roads, comfortable temperatures.

Bike Options

Our standard bike is the Royal Enfield Himalayan 411cc — purpose-built for exactly this kind of riding. It handles gravel, river crossings, and altitude well, and it is comfortable enough for 200 km highway days. For riders who prefer something with more suspension travel, we also offer the KTM Adventure series. Both bikes come with crash guards, panniers, and a toolkit.

What Is Included

  • Motorbike with full insurance
  • Fuel for the entire route
  • All permits (TIMS + ACAP)
  • Experienced riding guide
  • Support vehicle for luggage and as backup
  • Accommodation (tier-dependent)
  • Meals as per tier
  • Helmet, gloves, and riding jacket

Who Is This Tour For?

This tour suits riders who want the Mustang experience without committing two weeks and $2,000+ to Upper Mustang. You should be comfortable on a motorbike and willing to ride on rough mountain tracks — this is not a beginner's tour. But you do not need to be an expert off-road rider either. Our guide sets the pace and the support vehicle is always behind you.

If you are short on time, this is one of the best 8-day motorbike routes in Nepal. You get dramatic mountain scenery, cultural sites, hot springs, and genuine off-road riding — all packed into a single week.
