Gokyo Lakes Trek Map 2027: Route, Stops and Heights Day by Day

Short answer: The Gokyo Lakes route follows the Dudh Koshi valley from Lukla (2,860 m) to Namche Bazaar (3,440 m), then turns west up the Gokyo valley through Dole (4,110 m) and Machhermo (4,470 m) to Gokyo (4,790 m). Gokyo Ri is a day hike from there, and you walk back down the same way. Our plan is 10 days. It costs from USD 1,175 Budget, USD 2,060 Standard and USD 4,175 Luxury per person for two to four people.

Every stop, day by day

What a map does not show

The route shares its first two days with Everest Base Camp. You fly to Lukla, walk to Phakding, then climb to Namche, and the Gokyo valley splits away at Namche. After the rest day on day 3 the climb is steady: Dole on day 4 (11 km), Machhermo on day 5 (7 km) and Gokyo on day 6 (5.7 km).

Day 7 is the Gokyo Ri day. Our itinerary does not give a height for Gokyo Ri on this trek, so I have not put it on the chart. On our Three Passes plan the same viewpoint is listed at 5,357 m, and I would insure to 5,500 m for it. After the climb you walk down to Machhermo to sleep.

You return by the way you came: Machhermo to Namche (9.6 km), Namche to Lukla (13.5 km), then the flight to Kathmandu. In the busy seasons the flight can go from Manthali (Ramechhap) instead.

Best time to walk this route

How far is the Gokyo Lakes trek?

On our plan the walking days run from 5.7 km to 13.5 km. The longest are Namche to Dole (11 km), the Gokyo Ri day (11 km) and Namche to Lukla (13.5 km).

How high is Gokyo?

4,790 m on our itinerary, which is where you sleep on day 6 and day 7.

Where does the Gokyo trek start?

With a flight from Kathmandu or Manthali to Lukla (2,860 m), then a short walk to Phakding.

Is the Gokyo trail the same up and down?

Yes. You return through Machhermo, Namche and Lukla.

How much altitude do I need to insure for?

Plan for helicopter rescue cover to 5,500 m. Gokyo itself is 4,790 m and the Gokyo Ri day goes higher. Please buy it in your home country.

Is there a rest day for acclimatisation?

Yes, day 3 at Namche Bazaar (3,440 m).

How is this different from Everest Base Camp?

You share the first two days, then turn west to the lakes instead of continuing to Lobuche. The Everest Base Camp trek map shows the other route.
