Everest Base Camp trek cost from Chile: trek prices in dollars and pesos, Santiago to Kathmandu fares and journey times, the visa, how to pay and the best month.

Last updated 15 October 2026.

Short answer: A traveller from Chile pays USD 1,399 (Budget), USD 2,499 (Standard) or USD 4,999 (Luxury) for the 12 days on our Everest Base Camp Trek, 12 days page. In Chilean pesos that is about CLP 1,374,000, CLP 2,454,000 or CLP 4,908,000, at 982 pesos to the dollar. The flight is the big surprise. The cheapest return from Santiago with a checked bag I could find was EUR 2,330 (about USD 2,605 or CLP 2.56 million), nearly twice the price of the Budget trek. A single traveller on Budget should plan on roughly USD 4,200 to 4,350 in total, or CLP 4.1 to 4.3 million, before Kathmandu hotels, insurance and tips. Standard adds up to about USD 5,150 and Luxury to about USD 7,650.

I am Shreejan. When someone writes to me from Chile, the trek price is never the hard part. The questions are how to get from Santiago to Kathmandu without losing three days, whether pesos are any use, and which month suits a person whose seasons are the other way round. I checked what I could today, and where I could not find out, I say so.

Dollars are the real price. The peso column is only a guide, because you never pay us in pesos. I used 1 USD = 982 CLP, which is what two free exchange-rate feeds showed on 14 and 15 October 2026, and 1 EUR = 1.118 USD for the flight. The peso has moved a lot over the years, so redo the sum on the day you pay. The trip page has the full list of what is included, from the guide and permits to the Lukla flights and lodge nights. Kathmandu hotels sit outside every tier, so tell me what you want to spend and I will book them. Groups of five to eight pay less per person. A single traveller pays the 1 to 4 rate and no surcharge. On Standard the porters are shared between two trekkers, so if you are alone there is no porter and the guide carries up to 10 kg of your load. A porter just for you is USD 25 a day, plus 13 per cent VAT and a 3.5 per cent bank charge.

How do you fly from Santiago to Kathmandu, and how long does it take?

There is no direct flight, and every result I saw had two or three changes. I searched on 15 October 2026 for one adult in economy with a checked bag, leaving Santiago on 10 April and returning on 28 April 2027. The prices here are one day's picture, and they move.

Return EUR 2,448Santiago to Madrid (Iberia), then the same Chengdu route to Kathmandu. Same return37 h 20 out, 41 h back. The best balance of price and time on the cheap side
Return EUR 3,993 (shortest)Santiago to Paris (Air France), Paris, Delhi, Kathmandu (Air India). Back through Delhi and Paris34 h 40 out, 31 h 30 back
Return EUR 3,716 to 4,256Santiago to Paris (Air France), Paris, Doha, Kathmandu (Qatar Airways). Back the same way37 to 45 h out, 47 to 56 h back with long waits
Return EUR 2,465, one airlineTurkish Airlines throughout, through Sao Paulo and Istanbul. Dates shifted to 12 April out, 30 April back58 h 15 out, with a night in Sao Paulo and most of a day in Istanbul, 34 h 35 back
One way EUR 1,463Turkish Airlines, Santiago, Sao Paulo, Istanbul, Kathmandu, leaving 16, 17, 21 or 23 April34 h 15, one ticket with a checked bag

The Turkish Airlines fares matter for a reason. When I switched off connections built from separate tickets, only Turkish Airlines itineraries remained. So the cheaper mixes above, such as Avianca then Sichuan then Emirates then Air France, are most likely several tickets stitched together, even though the booking site does not say so. If the first flight is late, the next airline owes you nothing. Keep a spare day between them and ask whether your bag is checked through to Kathmandu. One fare I saw, EUR 2,510, also needs you to move yourself from London Heathrow to London Gatwick, which I would avoid with a trekking bag. Whether a Chilean passport needs a transit visa at Chengdu, Delhi, Doha or Istanbul is something I have not checked. It depends on the ticket, so ask the airline before you pay.

Whichever fare you pick, arrive in Kathmandu a day or two early. After 35 to 40 hours of travel you will not want a dawn flight to Lukla the next morning. Nepal is 9 hours 45 minutes ahead of Santiago in April 2027, after Chilean clocks have gone back for winter. When Chile moves its clocks forward again in September, the gap shrinks to 8 hours 45 minutes, which is the figure for an October or November trek. Those gaps follow Chile's present clock rules, so check them nearer the date.

Do Chilean citizens need a visa for Nepal?

You buy it when you land at Kathmandu airport. Chile is not on the short list of countries whose citizens must apply at an embassy first, and my visa on arrival guide names the countries that are. The fees are USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days and USD 125 for 90 days. For 12 days of trekking plus Kathmandu, take the 30-day one. Since 17 August 2026 you can also apply and pay online before you leave, which the e-visa guide explains. Your passport needs six months of validity on the day you arrive. Which Nepali embassy deals with Chile is not something I know, and this trip does not need one.

Can I pay in pesos, and what should I carry?

No. We take US dollars or euros, in cash or by card, and nothing in Nepali rupees from foreign guests. Chilean pesos are not part of it either. Ten per cent holds your dates, and the rest is paid in Kathmandu. Cash in Kathmandu is free of charge and a card adds 3.5 per cent, so notes in your money belt are the cheaper choice. Bring clean, undamaged notes. Your Chilean bank sets its own rules for foreign card use and for buying dollars, so phone them before you go. Keep some rupees for tea, charging and hot showers on the trail, roughly USD 20 a day on our trip page. For more, see money for trekkers and foreign cards at ATMs.

Which month is best for a Chilean trekker?

Your seasons run opposite to the Himalaya, so a warm Chilean summer is Nepal's cold dry winter. April is autumn at home and October is spring, and both are good months in Khumbu. Below are the night lows at Dingboche from our trip page.

MonthDingboche night low (C)What to expect
March-10.5Still cold early on, then warming up; the trails begin to fill
April-7.0Mild days, rhododendrons in flower below Namche, the second busiest month
May-3.5The warmest month, hazy afternoons, more rain around Lukla
June to September0.3 to 2.9Monsoon, so I would not go
October-5.3The dry spell starts; peak season and the busiest trails
November-11.0Hardly any rain, colder nights, fewer people as the month goes on
December-13.4Dry and cold; the first week is the quiet sweet spot
January and February-15.3 and -14.2The coldest months, and a few high lodges close

January and February are when many people at home have their summer break, but they are the hardest months on the mountain, so I would not choose them if you can move your leave. For most people I suggest April or the end of October into November. Our April 2027 guide covers departures and weather, and the full Everest Base Camp cost guide goes through every cost in turn.

What about the Lukla flight and altitude?

At busy times of year the Lukla planes often depart from Manthali, about four to five hours by road from the capital, so your car arrives in the small hours, anywhere from midnight to 2 am. You get the exact pick-up time when you book, and the Ramechhap and Lukla guide explains why. Budget and Standard take a small fixed-wing plane. Luxury is flown by helicopter in both directions. Use the long flight from Chile to read the altitude guide. Arrange your insurance at home, with trekking cover to 5,500 m and helicopter rescue from the same height. Policies sold in Nepal are not something I advise.

Which permits does the trek need?

You need three permits: Sagarmatha National Park (NPR 3,000), the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee (NPR 3,000) and a TIMS card (NPR 2,000). We get all of them for you and the trek price already includes them. No restricted-area permit is involved.

What are the terms for this trek?

Group size is 2 to 20, and you can also trek solo. The deposit is 10 per cent and it is non-refundable, with no refund if you cancel. You can reschedule free of charge with at least 72 hours notice to any date within one year. The balance is paid on arrival in Kathmandu in USD or EUR, cash or by card. Card carries 3.5 per cent and cash in Kathmandu carries none. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign clients.
