Last updated 10 October 2026.

Deng is a small village at 1,860 m on the Budhi Gandaki River, and it is the second night of our Manaslu Circuit. The walk from Jagat takes 6 to 7 hours, and on the way you pass the Manaslu Conservation Area checkpoint at Philim, where our permits are checked. On our Manaslu Circuit Trek, 12 days you sleep in Deng on day 3.

Short answer: Deng is at 1,860 m (6,102 ft), 460 m higher than Jagat. The walk takes 6 to 7 hours and follows the river through pine and bamboo forest. The next day goes on to Namrung (2,630 m) in 6 to 7 hours. On the Tsum Valley route you reach Deng just after Lokpa, where the Tsum trail meets the main circuit.

Where does Deng sit on our Manaslu treks?

Before it come Machha Khola and Jagat. After it comes Namrung. On the Tsum route you pass Lokpa just before Deng.

What is the walk from Jagat to Deng like?

After breakfast in Jagat we follow a jeep track to Ghatte Khola and then on to Philim. At Philim you show your permits at the Manaslu Conservation Area gate. That is the point where the route feels officially different, because from here you are inside the protected area. The trail then crosses several suspension bridges and runs through dense pine and bamboo forest. It goes on through Chisapani, Eklibhatti and Nyak, descends a little, and makes a final climb beside the Deng Khola, a tributary of the Budhi Gandaki, until you reach Deng.

The trail between Jagat and Deng includes narrow sections cut into cliff faces above the river, so watch your footing and keep to the pace your guide sets.

What is the walk from Deng to Namrung like?

The next morning the trail goes to Rana village (1,910 m), among quiet settlements, terraced fields and green hills, then crosses the Serang Khola and passes Bhiphedi (2,130 m). You walk through bamboo and rhododendron forest, cross rivers, and climb some tough slopes to Ghap (2,160 m). On the way you may pass old mani walls, prayer flags and small chortens. These mark the entrance to the Nupri region, where Tibetan Buddhist culture becomes much stronger. The day ends at Namrung, 2,630 m, a gateway to the upper Manaslu valley.

What are the lodge and food like in Deng?

Simple. You sleep in a teahouse or lodge, and the Manaslu route is more basic than Everest or Annapurna. At higher elevations all tiers share the best available lodge, and the tier changes your meals and porters rather than the room. Budget means no meals included and no porter. Standard means all trek meals and one porter for every two trekkers. Luxury means all meals plus fruit and nuts and a dedicated porter for each trekker.

Is altitude a problem in Deng?

No. At 1,860 m you are well below the heights where altitude matters, and the length of the day is the harder part. The climb starts on day 4 and gets serious after Namrung. The acclimatisation that matters for the pass is the rest day in Samagaon on day 7. Buy travel insurance at home with helicopter evacuation cover to 6,000 m.

What permits do you need in Deng?

Manaslu is a restricted area, so you need a licensed guide and the special permit. We arrange all of it and include it in the price: the restricted-area permit, the Manaslu Conservation Area permit, the Annapurna Conservation Area permit and a TIMS card. The checkpoint at Philim is on the day you walk to Deng, so keep your passport handy. You cannot walk apart from your guide. For the detail, read my Manaslu permits guide.

When is the best time to be in Deng?

For 2027, plan on September to November or March to May. Autumn is clearest and most stable. Spring is warm, with rhododendron on the lower slopes. December to February is cold and fewer teahouses stay open. June to August is monsoon, with rain, leeches and landslide risk along this exact stretch of the Budhi Gandaki, and I would avoid it. My Manaslu best time guide has the month-by-month detail.
