Three ways to reach Muktinath at about 3,800 m: a 5-day flight tour, a 6-day jeep tour and a helicopter day from Pokhara. Prices, days, height, weather risk and best months.

Last updated 15 October 2026.

Short answer: We run three ways to Muktinath, and each suits a different person. The gentlest on the body is the 6-day jeep tour, which rises over two days of road, from USD 1,370 per person for 2 to 4 people. The quickest with a safety margin is the Muktinath Tour by Flight, 5 Days: two short flights, a jeep to the temple, a night at Jomsom (2,720 m) below the temple, and a spare weather day. It costs USD 1,780, USD 1,960 or USD 2,520 per person for 2 to 4 people. The helicopter day tour from Pokhara costs from USD 1,350 per person for four people, with about an hour at the temple. Muktinath is about 3,800 m, so I advise cover to 4,000 m.

I am Shreejan. Many people who write to me about Muktinath are travelling with a parent, and they ask: how do we get there, what does it cost, and will the height be a problem? This page puts our three trips side by side.

What is the best way to reach Muktinath for older pilgrims?

If you ask me for one answer, it is the road, if your parent can sit in a jeep for long days, and the flight tour if they cannot. The road gives your body two days to rise before the temple. On the 6-day jeep tour you drive from Pokhara (820 m) to Tatopani (1,190 m) on day 2, and to Jomsom (2,720 m) on day 3. You visit Muktinath on day 4 and sleep lower again.

The cost is the road: rough and unsealed beyond Beni, with long days. For a bad back or knee, that can be harder than the height.

The flight tour is the opposite trade. You skip the road, but you rise from Pokhara to Jomsom in a short flight, so walk slowly on day 2. Our guide carries a pulse oximeter on both trips.

The helicopter is the least gentle on the body. I only suggest it to people who are well, short of time, and have spoken to their doctor. Whichever you choose, tell me about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition before you book. No trip here involves trekking, but the height is real.

My longer guide to the Muktinath pilgrimage explains the temple and what happens inside it,, and Muktinath by flight covers the flight route.

How many days do you need for Muktinath?

Five days from Kathmandu if you fly, six if you drive, and one day if you start in Pokhara by helicopter. The helicopter day does not include the journey to Pokhara or your hotel there, so count your own travel on top. On the flight tour you reach the temple on day 2 and day 3 is the spare. On the jeep tour the temple is day 4, after Pokhara, Tatopani and Jomsom.

Jomsom flights run in the morning only, so keep a spare night in Kathmandu before any international flight home.

How much does a Muktinath trip cost?

These are the prices on the three package pages on 15 October 2026, per person. They hold for 2027. The price is the same for a private trip and a group of the same size.

Group sizeFlight tour (Budget / Standard / Luxury)Jeep tour (Budget / Standard / Luxury)
1 (solo)USD 2,485 / 2,730 / 3,820USD 2,430 / 2,740 / 4,245
2 to 4USD 1,780 / 1,960 / 2,520USD 1,370 / 1,595 / 2,295
5 to 8USD 1,530 / 1,710 / 2,270USD 985 / 1,210 / 1,910
9 to 12Not offeredUSD 715 / 940 / 1,640
13 to 20Not offeredUSD 680 / 905 / 1,605

The helicopter tour is priced by the number of people in the one helicopter, so the price falls with each extra guest.

People in the helicopterBudgetStandardLuxury
1USD 5,205USD 5,260USD 5,320
2USD 2,640USD 2,665USD 2,715
3USD 1,780USD 1,800USD 1,850
4USD 1,350USD 1,365USD 1,415

Do not compare the helicopter price with the other two like for like. It covers the flight, permits, airport tax and Pokhara hotel transfers, but not your Pokhara hotel, the journey to Pokhara, or meals. The flight and jeep tours include four or five nights and, on Standard and Luxury, meals.

The tiers change the room and the food, not the route. Budget is simple twin-share rooms with breakfast, Standard is private rooms with all meals, and Luxury is private rooms with an ensuite where the lodge has one. On the helicopter day, Standard adds a private vehicle and an escort guide on the ground, and Luxury adds an SUV-class transfer and lunch. Lodge standards in Jomsom are modest on all three.

Both multi-day tours include the guide, the Annapurna Conservation Area permit, the TIMS card, Muktinath temple entry, the jeeps and a first aid kit with a pulse oximeter. Kathmandu hotel nights are not included; our family homestay is USD 15 per person per night and supports the Nagarjun Learning Center. International flights, visa, insurance, tips and drinks are extra, as are extra nights from weather or road delays.

How high is Muktinath, and what about altitude sickness?

The temple is about 3,800 m. Some maps give 3,710 m. Jomsom is 2,720 m and Pokhara is about 820 m.

Altitude sickness is about how fast you rise and where you sleep. On both multi-day tours you visit the temple in the day and sleep lower at Jomsom. The jeep tour gives you two days of road first. The helicopter takes you from about 820 m to about 3,800 m in one flight, which is why the visit is short and why I want to hear about your health first.

Headache, feeling sick, unusual breathlessness or dizziness are the signs to tell your guide about at once. The simple answer is to go down. From the temple, Jomsom is about 1.5 hours by jeep. Walk slowly and drink plenty of water. The helicopter carries emergency oxygen, but speak to your doctor first if you might need it.

What if the flight to Jomsom is cancelled?

It happens, because the Jomsom flights depend on wind and cloud. Day 3 of the flight tour is a spare for this reason, so one delay does not cost you the temple. If the weather stops the flights for longer, we rebook the next flight and tell you what it means for your onward travel. Extra nights caused by weather are not in the price.

The jeep tour does not depend on flights at all, which is why some pilgrims choose it. On the helicopter day the pilot makes the final call, and if it cannot go we move you to another day at no charge.

What is the best month to go to Muktinath?

MonthsWhat it is likeMy advice
December to FebruaryCold, and outside the window I give for the flight and helicopter tripsAsk me before you plan it
March to JuneWithin all three windows. Watch the pre-monsoon weather on the road in JuneGood for every trip
July and AugustMustang sits in the rain shadow, so it is drier than most of Nepal. Flights and helicopters still need clear skies, and monsoon rain can close sections of the road beyond BeniPossible, with spare days
September to NovemberWithin all three windows. Nights are cold from NovemberGood for every trip

For the jeep tour, the months I like most are March to June and September to November. For the flight and helicopter trips, my window is March to November. In my Muktinath guide I explain that the temple is busiest in the summer pilgrim season, so spring or autumn is quieter.

Is the road to Muktinath open?

As of 14 October 2026, I was told that the Beni to Jomsom road is repaired and open to vehicles. We check the road 48 hours before every departure, and if a stretch is closed we move your dates free of charge. My Jomsom road update has the detail.

Muktinath, Kagbeni and Jomsom are outside the restricted area, so none of these trips needs the Upper Mustang permit. To go on to Lo Manthang, see my guide to flying or driving into Upper Mustang or the 15-day Upper Mustang via Pokhara and Jomsom.

What insurance do you need for Muktinath?

Buy it at home, before you fly. The highest point on all three trips is Muktinath, about 3,800 m, and I round up to the next 500 m, which is 4,000 m. Check that your policy covers medical costs and helicopter evacuation up to 4,000 m, plus domestic flights on the flight tour and a helicopter flight at that height on the helicopter day. I do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal. If you add Damodar Kund, ask me for the figure.

Questions people ask

How do I get to Muktinath from Kathmandu? Fly to Pokhara, fly to Jomsom the next morning, and take a jeep to the temple. That is our 5-day tour. Or drive to Pokhara and go up the Kali Gandaki valley by jeep, which is our 6-day tour. The helicopter flies from Pokhara and does not start in Kathmandu.

Is it better to fly or drive to Muktinath? Flying is quicker. The road is gentler on the body because it gives you two days to rise, but it is long and rough. Flights can be cancelled by weather. Pick the problem you can live with.

How much does a helicopter to Muktinath cost? From USD 1,350 per person for four people in one helicopter, up to USD 5,320 for one person on Luxury.

Is Muktinath safe for elderly people? No trip involves trekking, and a jeep reaches close to the temple, but the height is real. The road tour is the gentlest on the body. Tell us about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition first.

Can I add Pokhara to a Muktinath trip? Both multi-day tours already include a night in Pokhara at each end. For more time there, I can quote extra nights. The helicopter tour starts and ends in Pokhara, so it suits people already staying there.

How high is Muktinath? About 3,800 m. You sleep at Jomsom, 2,720 m, on both multi-day tours.

Can I add Damodar Kund? Yes, to the helicopter day tour, for an extra charge per helicopter. A licensed guide goes on board, so up to three guests can fly. It needs a special permit of USD 50 per person, and we need your passport copies at least 7 days before the flight.

What are the terms for these trips?

Group size is 1 to 8 on the flight tour, 1 to 20 on the jeep tour and 1 to 4 in one helicopter, and solo is welcome. You book with a 10 per cent deposit. You can move your trip free within a year, with at least 72 hours notice, but the deposit is not refunded if you cancel. If we cannot run your trip, we refund what you have paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and money already spent for you. The balance is paid on arrival in Kathmandu, in USD or EUR, cash or card (for the helicopter day we agree it with you beforehand). Card adds 3.5 per cent, cash adds nothing. We cannot take Nepali rupees from foreign clients.
