Kathmandu Valley Day Tours Compared: Which One or Two to Book and What Each Costs (2027)
Last updated 15 October 2026.
Short answer: Most visitors should book two day tours, not one and not five. Take the Pashupatinath and Boudhanath Day Tour for the living faith of the city, and either the Swayambhunath and Kathmandu Durbar Square Day Tour or the Bhaktapur and Patan Durbar Square Day Tour for the old royal squares. With 2 to 4 people on Standard they cost USD 115, USD 110 and USD 200 per person. If you have three or four days, a hotel-and-sightseeing package costs less than you might expect. A single day covers one pair of sites well. I would not try to cover everything.
I am Shreejan. The question I get most from guests with a spare day or two in Kathmandu is some version of "which temples, and how many days?" This post is a chooser. It does not describe each site in depth, because I have written those guides already. It helps you pick.
How many days do you need in Kathmandu to see the main sights?
Two days is the number I give most often. One day gets you a pair of sites at an unhurried pace. Two days adds the pair that shows the old kingdoms. Three or four days lets you add the Newar towns and keep an afternoon free.
| Time you have | What I would book | Why |
|---|---|---|
| 1 day | Pashupatinath and Boudhanath, or Swayambhunath and Durbar Square | Two sites each, no rushing |
| 2 days | Both of those, on separate days | Four sites, which is the classic first look |
| 3 days | Those two, plus Bhaktapur and Patan | Adds the Newar cities and the craft lanes |
| 4 days | Kathmandu Valley Heritage Tour, 4 days | All seven sites with hotel and airport transfers |
| 5 days | Kathmandu, Nagarkot and Dhulikhel, 5 days | Temples first, then a ridge, a sunrise and a hill town |
If you wonder about the three big temples in one day, see Kathmandu temples in one day.
Which Kathmandu day tour should you book first?
That depends on what you want to feel at the end of the day.
Book the Pashupatinath and Boudhanath Day Tour if you want to understand how people in Nepal pray. Pashupatinath is Hindu and is as direct as it gets: a river, a temple you watch from across the water, and cremations on the bank. Boudhanath is Tibetan Buddhist and much calmer. Your guide explains what you are seeing before you get there. You can read more in our Pashupatinath guide and Boudhanath guide.
Book the Swayambhunath and Kathmandu Durbar Square Day Tour if you like views, buildings and history. Swayambhunath gives you the valley from a hill. The old royal square gives you palace courtyards, the Taleju temple and the house of the living goddess. There are 365 stone steps on the main way up to the stupa, though a road also reaches the top, which matters for knees. Our guides to Swayambhunath and Kathmandu Durbar Square go further.
Patan, Bhaktapur or the villages: which day tour outside Kathmandu is worth it?
Guests ask "Patan or Bhaktapur?" all the time. Patan if you like craft and museums, Bhaktapur if you want to watch a medieval-looking city at work. Both if you only have one day.
Patan is about 5 km from Kathmandu and Bhaktapur about 12 km, both on our page. Patan is the city of metalworkers, with a museum in a restored palace wing. Bhaktapur has the five-storey Nyatapola temple and a square where potters set clay out to dry. The Bhaktapur and Patan Durbar Square Day Tour does both in one day. It is the only tour of ours that does, and I built it for people who ask me exactly this question. If you would rather sit and watch, choose one city.
For one city plus a hill temple, take the Bhaktapur and Changunarayan Day Tour. Changunarayan is a Vishnu temple on a ridge above the valley with carvings more than a thousand years old. For a quieter day, the Patan, Bungamati and Khokana Day Tour adds two Newar villages with carved windows and old oil mills. There are fewer visitors and a lot of walking on uneven lanes. My notes are in Bhaktapur day trip from Kathmandu and Patan, Bungamati and Khokana.
If you love photography and can get up early, the Nagarkot Sunrise and Bhaktapur Day Tour collects you around 4:30 am for the ridge at Nagarkot, then comes down to Bhaktapur. If the morning is cloudy we still go, because the ridge walk is worth it, but I cannot promise the mountains.
What does each Kathmandu day tour cost?
These are the prices on the live package pages today, per person, for 2 to 4 people. A private trip and a group of the same size cost the same, and the price falls as the group grows. Lunch is included on Standard and Luxury. On Budget you pay for your own lunch.
| Tour | Budget | Standard | Luxury | Standard, solo |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Pashupatinath and Boudhanath | USD 70 | USD 115 | USD 150 | USD 165 |
| Swayambhunath and Kathmandu Durbar Square | USD 65 | USD 110 | USD 150 | USD 165 |
| Patan, Bungamati and Khokana | USD 115 | USD 160 | USD 195 | USD 230 |
| Bhaktapur and Changunarayan | USD 120 | USD 165 | USD 205 | USD 240 |
| Nagarkot Sunrise and Bhaktapur | USD 110 | USD 155 | USD 195 | USD 215 |
| Bhaktapur and Patan Durbar Square | USD 155 | USD 200 | USD 240 | USD 280 |
The two temple tours cost less because the sites are close and the driving is short. The tours out to Patan, Bhaktapur or the villages need longer drives.
Is a day tour or the 4-day package cheaper?
This is the comparison most people miss. Four day tours on Standard (the two temple tours, Bhaktapur and Changunarayan, and Patan with the villages) add up to USD 550 per person for 2 to 4 people. That covers the same seven heritage sites as the four-day package, but with no hotel.
The Kathmandu Valley Heritage Tour, 4 days costs USD 440 (Budget), USD 640 (Standard) or USD 1,140 (Luxury) per person for 2 to 4 people. Standard includes 3 nights in a 3-star Kathmandu hotel with a private room, breakfast, lunch and dinner from dinner on day 1 to breakfast on day 4, airport pick-up and drop-off, a private vehicle, a guide and the entrance fees for all seven sites. So for USD 90 more than the day tours, you get three hotel nights and the meals. If you still need a hotel, the package is the better value. If you already have a room you like, day tours let you pick and choose.
The Kathmandu, Nagarkot and Dhulikhel Tour, 5 days costs USD 595, USD 855 and USD 1,515 for 2 to 4 people. It has two nights in Kathmandu, one at Nagarkot and one at Dhulikhel, and it ends at Namobuddha and Panauti. Patan is not on this one. If Patan matters to you, take the 4-day tour.
There is one more option on our site, the UNESCO World Heritage Site Tour, 1 day, at USD 149, USD 249 and USD 299 for 2 to 4 people. It sets out to see all seven heritage sites in a single day, with a 7:00 am pick-up. Honestly, that is a lot of cobbles and car seats for one day. It suits someone with exactly one day. Everyone else will enjoy two days more.
What is included, and what do you pay at the gate?
All our valley day tours include a licensed guide, a private car or van with a driver sized to your group, collection from and return to your Kathmandu hotel, the entrance fees for the sites on that tour, bottled water in the vehicle, government taxes and our service charge. Standard and Luxury add lunch. Luxury adds a senior guide, a more spacious air-conditioned vehicle and all non-alcoholic drinks.
Hotels are not included in the day tours. The 4-day and 5-day packages do include hotels, as listed above.
On the Bhaktapur and Patan day, the page lists the fees we cover: NPR 1,000 for Patan Durbar Square, which includes the Patan Museum, and NPR 1,800 for Bhaktapur Durbar Square. On the other tours the fees are also inside the price, and I leave the figures out because the package pages do not quote them. You may pay at the gate only for a temple not on the list, such as the Golden Temple in Patan. Tips, drinks beyond lunch, shopping and travel insurance are also yours. Buy insurance at home. These tours stay in the valley, so you need ordinary travel and medical cover and nothing special for altitude.
When is the best time to visit the Kathmandu Valley sights?
| Months | What to expect | For these tours |
|---|---|---|
| September to November | The air is clearer after the rains and the days are comfortable | Good for all of them, and the clearest for Nagarkot views |
| December to January | Cool mornings, often hazy | Fine for city sightseeing, less reliable for mountain views |
| February to May | Warmer, with more light and some haze by late spring | Good. Start early in April and May |
| June to August | Hot and wet | Possible, but the sunrise tour is a gamble |
The package pages give September to November and February to May as the best months. The rest of the table is my own experience of the valley. Festival days can close roads or fill the squares. For 2027, tell me your dates and I will say what I know.
Can you do the Kathmandu day tours with kids or older parents?
Yes. Altitude is not an issue: about 1,400 m, or 2,175 m on the Nagarkot ridge. The honest limits are cobbles, steps and the early start.
For older travellers, the Swayambhunath tour is gentler than it sounds, because a road reaches the top and the steps are optional. The Pashupatinath and Boudhanath day has some steps and a lot of standing. Patan, Bungamati and Khokana has the most uneven walking. Tell me when you book if someone walks slowly, and the guide sets the pace. Skip the Nagarkot sunrise tour unless everyone is happy with a 4:30 am start.
For children, I would pick Bhaktapur, where they can watch potters, or the Swayambhunath day with the monkeys. Children pay the adult price on our tours. At Pashupatinath, tell younger children before you go that they will see cremations, and decide whether to go. Your guide will explain it either way. The 4-day package suits families with older children who enjoy history.

What are the terms for these tours?
We take groups of 1 to 20, so solo is fine. You book with a 10 per cent deposit, which is non-refundable, and there is no refund if you cancel. You can move your trip free of charge to any date within one year if you tell us at least 72 hours ahead. The balance is paid on arrival in Kathmandu, in USD or EUR, cash or card. Card carries 3.5 per cent and cash in Kathmandu carries none. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign clients.
How do you plan this with us?
If you are also planning a trek, things to do in Kathmandu before and after your trek and our Kathmandu travel guide help you place the days. For Kathmandu with a lake, Kathmandu and Pokhara in 4 days is the longer version.
