Is three days enough for Chitwan? How the days run from Kathmandu, the 5 to 6 hour road, the full safari day by jeep, canoe and jungle walk, what you will really see and what it costs.

Last updated 9 October 2026.

Short answer: three days is enough for a first visit to Chitwan, but only one of them is a full safari day. The first and last days are mostly the road, which takes five to six hours each way from Kathmandu. If you want a second full day in the park, add a night. For most people with a week or less, three days works well.

Our Chitwan Jungle Safari, 3 Days goes by private vehicle from your Kathmandu hotel, with two nights in a jungle lodge beside the park and a naturalist guide on every activity. If you want a closer look at each activity, our guide to things to do in Chitwan covers jeep, canoe, walks and villages. This post is about the days themselves: how they run, and whether three is the right number.

Is 3 days enough for Chitwan?

For a first visit, yes. You get the jeep safari, the dugout canoe, a guided walk, a Tharu evening and some early birdwatching. What you do not get is a second day to try again for a sighting. Wildlife is never guaranteed, and a second full day gives you a second chance. If seeing a particular animal matters a lot to you, take four days. If you want a taste of the lowlands before or after the mountains, three is plenty.

How do the three days run?

DayWhat you doSleeps
1Drive from Kathmandu to Chitwan, 5 to 6 hours. Briefing, then a Tharu stick dance in the eveningJungle lodge near the park
2Early walk and birdwatching, jeep safari in the park, dugout canoe on the Rapti riverJungle lodge near the park
3Optional first-light bird walk, breakfast, drive back to Kathmandu in the afternoonNot included (departure day)

What is the road from Kathmandu like?

You leave your hotel in the morning and drive south along the Trishuli river. The hills give way to the warm lowlands of the Terai, and the road takes five to six hours with stops when you want them. Lowland Chitwan is only about 150 m above sea level, against about 1,400 m in Kathmandu, so it is much warmer. I would bring water, a light snack and something to read.

At the lodge you have a cool drink and a briefing from your naturalist guide about the next day. In the evening the Tharu people, the indigenous community of the Terai, perform their stick dance by firelight, with bamboo staves and madal drums. Our guide to Tharu culture says more about who they are.

What does the full safari day look like?

We start early, when the birds are loudest. Your naturalist guide leads a walk at the edge of the forest, looking for drongos, hornbills, kingfishers and the tracks of animals that came through in the night.

After breakfast we drive into the park by 4x4 jeep along sal forest tracks and grassland clearings. The greater one-horned rhinoceros is the star, and Chitwan is the best place in Nepal to see it in the wild. You can also see spotted deer, wild boar, and gharial and marsh mugger crocodiles on the river banks.

After lunch at the lodge we board a dugout canoe on the Rapti river and drift downstream in near-silence, watching birds and crocodiles on the banks as the light turns gold. Dinner is at the lodge.

What will you really see?

Possibly a rhino, almost certainly birds, and probably deer and crocodiles. Tigers live in the park but are rarely seen, and we cannot promise any sighting. I would rather tell you that now than have you spend the trip disappointed. The walk, the canoe and the early light are the reason to go, and an animal is a bonus.

When should you go and what should you pack?

The Terai is hot and humid from April to September and pleasant from October to March. Winter mornings can be cool and misty. October to March is best for comfort and visibility, and February to April is good for the grassland views. Our guide to the best time to visit Chitwan goes month by month.

Bring neutral-coloured clothes in greens and browns, insect repellent, a hat, and binoculars if you have them. Bring your passport.

Should you add a night or fold Chitwan into a longer trip?

If the three days feel short, there are two honest options. You can ask us for an extra night at the lodge, which gives you a second full day in the park. Or you can place Chitwan inside a longer journey with Kathmandu and Pokhara, which our Golden Triangle cost guide prices out. I would not shorten it to two days, because the road eats most of a day each way and you would see very little.

Which tier suits Chitwan?

The activities are the same on all three tiers, so the difference is comfort. On Budget you pay for lunch and dinner yourself, and the lodge is simple. Standard adds all meals and a private room in a 3-star lodge. Luxury adds a deluxe lodge with an ensuite bathroom, drinks and a more spacious air-conditioned vehicle for the long road. If the drive worries you, the vehicle is the reason to look at Luxury.

Questions people ask

Can I add Chitwan to a trek? Yes. Many people trek first and then spend two nights in the lowlands, where it is warm and flat. Tell us your dates and we will fit it around them.

Is it good for families? The days are easy and there is no climbing. Tell us the ages of the children when you ask and we will say what suits them.

Will we see a tiger? Probably not. Tigers are rarely seen.

Do I need to go in the early morning? The early walk is when the birds are loudest, and I would not skip it.
