Overview
Canyoning in Nepal is a thrilling adventure for anyone who loves the outdoors. It’s both an adrenaline-packed sport and a fun recreational activity, with popular spots near Kathmandu including Jalbire, Sundarijal, Kakani, and Bhote Koshi. The adventure includes descending waterfalls, jumping, and sliding through natural terrain, creating an unforgettable experience for body and mind. It’s a chance to explore hidden corners of the Himalayas, from mountains and caves to rivers, waterfalls, and lush forests. Canyoning combines several outdoor techniques such as hiking, climbing, sliding, scrambling, abseiling, jumping, and swimming. Our expert guides, as pioneers of canyoning in Nepal, ensure participants move safely through steep canyon walls and waterfalls, finishing in deep natural pools. We operate trips in multiple locations around Kathmandu, offering both adventure and stunning scenery for everyone who joins.
Canyoning in Kakani
An exciting canyoning adventure can be experienced just outside Kathmandu, at the scenic destination of Kakani, located about 35 kilometers from the Kathmandu Ring Road. This area features two popular canyoning sites—Phung Phunye Canyon (185 meters) and Chhahare Canyon (145 meters)—situated near the villages of Dhansar and Jurethum.
Both canyons are set in beautiful natural surroundings. While descending from Phung Phunye, visitors can enjoy impressive panoramic views of the Himalayan ranges, including the Ganesh Himal, Manaslu, and Langtang regions. The steady water flow throughout the year makes the experience reliable in every season. At an altitude of around 1,325 meters above sea level, the climate remains comfortable, avoiding extreme heat or cold.
The canyoning location is also close to the well-known hill station of Kakani, a favorite spot for day trips and scenic viewpoints. Nearby villages are recognized for fish farming, particularly for the widely known Japanese trout, adding another interesting aspect to the visit.
Canyoning in Sundarijal
Sundarijal is located about 15 kilometers northeast of Kathmandu, nestled at the foothills of Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park. The area lies west of Gagalphedi, east of Nayapati and Baluwa, and north of Aalapot, with its northern boundary connecting to the districts of Nuwakot and Sindhupalchok. The Sundarijal Bus Park can be reached in roughly one hour by vehicle from the popular tourist hub of Thamel. From Sundarijal village, the canyoning site is about a 30-minute uphill walk, offering a pleasant introduction to the surrounding natural scenery. We provide convenient one-day canyoning programs for those looking for a quick adventure near Kathmandu. For travelers who want more time in nature, extended trips can also be arranged based on individual preferences and schedules.
