Tadapani (2,630m): The Forest Junction and Sunrise Balcony of the Annapurna Foothills

Tadapani is the forest crossroads of the Annapurna foothills, and one of the best sunrise balconies in Nepal that most people walk straight through without knowing its name. At about 2,630 metres, it sits in a clearing of tall rhododendron forest where two of the region's classic trails meet, and on a clear dawn the wall of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and the Fishtail lights up over the treetops right in front of the lodges. The name means "far water" in Nepali, from the days when the settlement had to fetch its water from a long way off.

Where is Tadapani and how do you get there?

Tadapani sits high in the Annapurna foothills above the Gurung village of Ghandruk, on the ridge that separates the Modi Khola from the Ghorepani side of the range. On the classic loop you reach it from Ghorepani, climbing over the Deurali pass and dropping through dense rhododendron forest for two to three hours; coming the other way it is a steady forest climb up from Ghandruk. There is no road to Tadapani, so however you arrive you walk in, and the last stretch through the moss and rhododendron is part of the pleasure.

Why Tadapani is worth the stop

The reason to sleep at Tadapani rather than pass through is the morning. Unlike Poon Hill, where you climb in the dark with a crowd, at Tadapani the view is simply there when you step out of the lodge at first light, with Annapurna South and the Fishtail close and enormous over the forest and hardly anyone about. It is also a genuine trail junction, which is what makes it so useful: from here you can carry on down to Ghandruk and out, or turn up the Modi Khola towards Chhomrong and on to Annapurna Base Camp. For a trekker linking Poon Hill with the Sanctuary, Tadapani is the hinge the whole route turns on.

The forest around Tadapani

Tadapani sits inside some of the finest mid-hill rhododendron forest in the Annapurna region, and in the spring, through March and April, the slopes turn red and pink with bloom. It is quiet, birdsong-filled country, and the forest here is part of the protected habitat that, higher and deeper in, still shelters the red panda. You are unlikely to see one, but you are walking through the kind of country they need, which is worth knowing as you go.

Facilities at Tadapani

Tadapani is a small cluster of teahouse lodges built for trekkers, with simple twin rooms, a warm dining hall and the usual trekking menu. It is comfortable enough for a good night before an early view, but it is a trail settlement, not a town, so bring cash and a warm layer for the dawn. Because it is low and well served, it makes an easy, pleasant overnight for trekkers of any experience.

When is the best time to go?

October and November give the clearest, most stable skies and the sharpest sunrise over Annapurna South, and March to May is the warm spring season when the rhododendron forest around Tadapani is in full colour. Both are excellent. The monsoon from June to September brings cloud and leeches to the forest, and winter is clear but cold with the chance of snow on the trail. For most trekkers the autumn and spring windows are the ones to aim for.

Common questions about Tadapani

How high is Tadapani? About 2,630 metres, low enough that altitude is not a real concern on this part of the trek.

Is Tadapani better than Poon Hill for sunrise? It is different. Poon Hill is a wide, famous panorama you climb to before dawn; Tadapani is a closer, quieter view of Annapurna South and the Fishtail straight from the lodges. Many trekkers do both on the same loop.

What permits do I need? The Annapurna Conservation Area permit and, since 2023, a licensed guide on the route. We arrange both.

Can I reach Annapurna Base Camp from Tadapani? Yes. Tadapani is the junction where the Poon Hill trail turns up towards Chhomrong and the Sanctuary, so it links the two treks naturally.
