Why I send people to Pikey
Pikey Peak is for people who want the Everest view without the Everest crowds or the Lukla flight. From the top at 4,065 m you see Everest, Lhotse, Makalu and Kanchenjunga on a clear morning. Because we drive in, there is no flight to cancel, and it works in winter and in the weeks when the higher trails are cold or full. I keep a night at Junbesi so you see the village and its monastery instead of tagging the summit and driving out.
Day by day
Day 1: Kathmandu to Dhap
A long but scenic drive east through the middle hills to the roadhead at Dhap. You watch terraced hillsides, river gorges and small bazaar towns go by, and arrive in the late afternoon. Night in a simple lodge.
Day 2: Dhap to Jhapre
An easy first walk of 4 to 5 hours through terraced fields and small villages, with the first mountain views opening up. Night in Jhapre. Read the Jhapre guide.
Day 3: Jhapre to Pikey Base Camp
About 5 hours up through rhododendron and pine forest, past chortens and prayer flags, to the base camp below the peak (3,640 m). This is the day the big mountains fill the horizon.
Day 4: Pikey Peak at sunrise, then Junbesi
A pre-dawn start and a slow, cold climb to be on the summit for first light. We take our time up there, then descend the far side through forest and pasture to Junbesi (2,700 m), 6 to 7 hours in all. Your guide checks your oxygen levels, and if you are unwell we turn back.
Day 5: Junbesi
A gentle day at one of the loveliest Sherpa villages in Solu, with a walk up to the Thubten Chholing monastery. No big climb.
Day 6: back to Kathmandu
The long road back, arriving in the evening. We drop you at your hotel.

A solo trekker on Standard has no porter, because porters are shared between two. Your guide carries up to 10 kg of your bag. On Luxury a solo trekker still has a porter. Budget never has one. A porter can be added on any tier for USD 25 a day plus 13% VAT and the 3.5% bank charge, USD 29.24 a day in all. Not in the price: international flights, your Nepal visa (USD 50 for 30 days on arrival), travel insurance bought at home that covers trekking to 4,500 m and helicopter evacuation, your Kathmandu hotel (quoted separately), tips, and on Budget your meals.
Permits
Pikey Peak does not enter Sagarmatha National Park, so there is no park fee. You need a TIMS card (NPR 2,000, SAARC NPR 1,000) and a local entry permit from the municipality, collected on the route. The local fee is set by the municipality and changes from time to time. Our drive-in route via Dhap and Jhapre does not go through the Gaurishankar Conservation Area, so there is no conservation-area fee. We arrange the permits and include them.
Best time
October to early December is the most reliable, with clear air. March and April bring rhododendron flowers on the climb. Pikey also works in late December to February, when days are short and nights cold but skies are often the clearest of the year and the trail is empty. We avoid June to mid-September, when cloud sits on the view. More in the Pikey Peak guide.
