Getting into Nepal is easy. You do not need to apply in advance — just walk up to the immigration counter at Tribhuvan International Airport with your passport and cash.
Visa Costs (2026)
| Duration | Cost (USD) | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| 15 days | $30 | Short treks: Poon Hill, Mardi Himal, ABC |
| 30 days | $50 | Most treks: EBC, Annapurna Circuit, Langtang |
| 90 days | $125 | Multiple treks, extended travel, volunteering |
What You Need at the Airport
- Passport with at least 6 months validity and 2 blank pages
- Cash in USD — exact amount is fastest. They also accept EUR, GBP, AUD. No cards
- 1 passport photo — or use the free photo machines at the immigration hall
- Completed arrival card — fill in on the plane or at the airport kiosks
The Process (Step by Step)
- Land at Tribhuvan International Airport (KTM)
- Fill in the arrival card at the kiosk machines (touch screen, takes 2 minutes)
- Join the visa payment queue — pay in cash at the counter
- Receive your payment receipt
- Join the immigration queue with passport + receipt
- Immigration officer stamps your visa — done
Total time: 30-90 minutes depending on how many flights land simultaneously. Peak arrival times (evening flights from Gulf) can be very busy.
Tips to Speed Things Up
- Fill in the online arrival form before your flight at nepaliport.immigration.gov.np — saves 10-15 minutes
- Bring exact cash — avoids waiting for change
- Have your passport photo ready — the free photo booths sometimes have queues
- If you see two queues, the shorter one is usually for people who pre-filled the form online
Visa Extensions
Need more time? Extend at the Department of Immigration in Kathmandu (near Thamel) or Pokhara:
- Extension fee: $2 per day
- Maximum stay: 150 days per calendar year
- Processing: usually same day
- Documents: passport, 1 photo, extension fee in NPR
Countries That Do NOT Need a Visa
Citizens of China, India, and SAARC countries (Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Pakistan, Sri Lanka) do not need a visa for Nepal. Chinese citizens get a free visa stamp on arrival. Indian citizens enter freely with an ID card.
