Ama Yangri Trek in 3 Days: Route, Cost, Permits and Best Time (2027)
Last updated 17 October 2026.
Short answer: Ama Yangri is a 3,771 m summit above Tarkeghyang in Helambu, a 4 to 5 hour drive north of Kathmandu. On our Ama Yangri Trek, 3 days you drive up on day one, climb to the top and back on day two (5 to 6 hours), and drive home on day three. For one to four people it costs USD 250 on Budget, USD 499 on Standard and USD 699 on Luxury per person, with the Langtang National Park permit and TIMS card included. October, November, March and April are the best months.
I am Shreejan. Ama Yangri is the trek I suggest when someone has a long weekend in Kathmandu and wants to stand on a proper Himalayan viewpoint without a flight. It is short, it is steep on the summit day, and on a clear morning it gives you the Langtang and Ganesh Himal ranges from a hilltop most visitors to Nepal have never heard of.
What is the Ama Yangri trek?
Ama Yangri is a hill of 3,771 metres in the Helambu area of Sindhupalchok, north-east of the Kathmandu Valley, and the highest point on the ridge above Tarkeghyang. The trek starts from Tarkeghyang, a Hyolmo village at about 2,600 metres with a monastery at its centre. You can read more about the village in my Tarkeghyang village guide.
Because the road now reaches Tarkeghyang, the whole trip fits into three days: one day on the road, one long walking day, and one day back. It is not a teahouse-to-teahouse trek like Everest or Annapurna. It is one climb from one village, done properly.

How do the three days run?
Day 1, Kathmandu to Tarkeghyang. We pick you up from your hotel and drive north through Sindhupalchok. The road is about 76 km and takes 4 to 5 hours, climbing out of rice terraces into pine forest. You arrive in Tarkeghyang in the afternoon, walk around the village and the monastery, and go to bed early.
Day 2, summit and back. You start before sunrise, because the mountains are clearest in the early morning and cloud usually comes up from the valleys by mid-morning. The trail climbs through forest and then open ridge to the top at 3,771 metres. Most people take 5 to 6 hours for the full round trip. The climb is about 1,170 metres and the last section is steep, so take it slowly and use poles on the way down. You sleep a second night in Tarkeghyang.
Day 3, back to Kathmandu. A relaxed breakfast, a last look at the village, and the 4 to 5 hour drive home. You are back in Kathmandu by the afternoon.
How hard is Ama Yangri?
It is a short trek with one hard day. If you walk regularly at home and can manage a long hill walk with a steep finish, you will be fine. The height is not extreme: 3,771 metres is high enough to feel the thinner air on the last climb, but you only touch it for a short time before coming back down to 2,600 metres to sleep, which is the safest way to visit that height.
The harder part for many people is the road. Two days of 4 to 5 hours on mountain roads is tiring, and after rain some sections can be slow. We check the road before every departure.
What does the Ama Yangri trek cost in 2027?
Prices are per person and the same for private and group trips. They change only with group size.
- Budget, USD 250 (1 to 4 people): guide, local transport, shared lodge room, permits. No porter, so you carry your own bag, and meals are not included.
- Standard, USD 499: tourist vehicle, private twin room where possible, breakfast, lunch and dinner, and one porter for every two trekkers. If you trek alone on Standard there is no porter, and the guide carries up to 10 kg of your bag instead.
- Luxury, USD 699: private vehicle, the best rooms available, all meals with fruit, nuts and soft drinks, and your own porter. Your bag can weigh up to 15 kg.
The government rule is a maximum of 20 kg per porter, so on Standard that is 10 kg each for two trekkers. Kathmandu hotels before and after the trek are not included, so add those to your budget. On the trail, allow money for snacks, drinks outside meals, hot showers and charging, and tips for the guide and porter.
What is the best time for Ama Yangri?
| Months | What it is like |
|---|---|
| October and November | Clearest skies and the best mountain views. Cool mornings, cold at the summit. Our first choice. |
| December to February | Very clear but cold. Frost and sometimes snow or ice near the top, so you need warm layers and good boots. |
| March and April | Rhododendron forest in flower and warmer days. More haze by late morning, so start early. |
| May | Warm and often hazy, with afternoon showers starting. |
| June to September | Monsoon. Cloud hides the mountains most days, the trail is muddy and the road can be cut by landslides. I do not recommend it. |
Ama Yangri, Helambu or Gosaikunda?
If you have three days, Ama Yangri gives you the biggest view for the least time. If you have six days and want to walk village to village, our Helambu Trek, 6 days is the better trip; my Helambu for beginners post explains it. If you want sacred lakes at altitude and have five days, look at the Gosaikunda Trek. For the seasons in this whole area, see Helambu month by month.
What should you pack?
Pack for a cold summit morning and a mild village evening: a warm fleece, a windproof jacket, hat and gloves, trekking poles, a head torch for the early start, two litres of water and sun cream. If you do not have a sleeping bag or down jacket, tell us at your briefing and we will lend you one for the trek.
Frequently asked questions
How high is Ama Yangri?
The summit is 3,771 metres. You sleep lower, in Tarkeghyang at about 2,600 metres.
How long is the Ama Yangri trek?
Three days from Kathmandu and back: one drive day, one summit day of 5 to 6 hours, and one drive day.
Do I need a permit for Ama Yangri?
Yes. You need the Langtang National Park permit (NPR 3,000 for foreigners) and a TIMS card (NPR 2,000). Both are included in our price and we arrange them for you.
Can a beginner do Ama Yangri?
Yes, if you are reasonably fit. There is no technical climbing, but the summit day has a steep 1,170 m climb and descent, so regular walking before you come makes it much more enjoyable.
Can I do Ama Yangri solo?
Yes. You trek privately with your own licensed guide, and the price for one person is the same as for two to four.
Is there altitude sickness risk on Ama Yangri?
The risk is low because you only reach 3,771 m for a short time and sleep at 2,600 m. Go slowly on the last climb, drink water, and tell your guide if you feel a headache or dizziness.
