Trekking in Nepal from Germany: the short answer
The 12-day Everest Base Camp trek costs USD 1,399 on Budget, USD 2,499 on Standard and USD 4,999 on Luxury per person for one to four trekkers, which is about EUR 1,250, EUR 2,235 and EUR 4,470 today. German passport holders buy the visa when they land in Kathmandu. No airline flies nonstop from Germany, and Frankfurt return fares on 7 October 2026 ran from EUR 1,253 to EUR 1,393 with one stop each way. Autumn and spring are the trekking seasons, and your school and Easter breaks line up with both. Message me on WhatsApp, +977 9810351300, with your dates and I will price them.
Why a walker from the Alps is better prepared than most, and where that stops
If you have done a few hut-to-hut weeks in the Alps, you already know the habits that matter here: early starts, long days on your feet, a simple bed, a plate of something hot in the evening. A Nepal teahouse trek works the same way. What the Alps do not give you is a night at 5,000 metres. The Zugspitze is 2,962 metres, and on the Everest trail you pass that height before the end of your second walking day (Namche Bazaar is 3,440 metres). Fitness helps, but walking slowly and listening to your guide helps more, and that is the part German walkers sometimes find hardest.
We are a Kathmandu family company, registered in 2016, with three generations of guiding behind us. Nobody sits between you and the people who walk with you. The guide who meets you at the airport is ours, and the permits are issued in our name.
The treks that suit travellers from Germany
These are the treks I would put in front of a German walker, with live prices per person. Dollar prices are what you pay; euro figures are a guide.
| Trek | Budget | Standard | Luxury |
|---|---|---|---|
| Everest Base Camp, 12 days | USD 1,399 about EUR 1,250 | USD 2,499 about EUR 2,235 | USD 4,999 about EUR 4,470 |
| Annapurna Base Camp, 9 days | USD 499 about EUR 445 | USD 799 about EUR 715 | USD 1,400 about EUR 1,250 |
| Manaslu Circuit, 12 days | USD 799 about EUR 715 | USD 1,599 about EUR 1,430 | USD 2,099 about EUR 1,875 |
| Langtang Valley, 8 days | USD 365 about EUR 325 | USD 650 about EUR 580 | USD 1,000 about EUR 895 |
| Ghorepani Poon Hill, 6 days | USD 499 about EUR 445 | USD 749 about EUR 670 | USD 1,235 about EUR 1,105 |
| Mardi Himal, 7 days | USD 454 about EUR 405 | USD 849 about EUR 760 | USD 1,111 about EUR 995 |
Price notes, per person: Langtang Valley, 8 days: one trekker; two to four pay less (USD 320, 570 and 800); Ghorepani Poon Hill, 6 days: two to four trekkers; solo Standard is USD 960 and solo Luxury USD 1,930.
Everest Base Camp is the one most people write about, and it needs two weeks in total once the flights are added. Annapurna Base Camp is the walk I suggest to people who want big mountains without a Lukla flight; it climbs through rhododendron forest and ends in a ring of peaks. Manaslu is for people who have crossed a high Alpine pass before and want quiet trails; it is a restricted area, so a licensed guide and an agency permit are compulsory. Langtang starts a long day by road from Kathmandu and suits anyone who prefers valley walking to passes. Poon Hill and Mardi Himal are the short options if all you have is a week.
Tiers in one line: on Budget you carry your own bag and buy your own meals; Standard adds all meals, private rooms and one porter for every two trekkers; Luxury gives you a porter to yourself, deluxe private rooms and, on Everest, a helicopter to and from Lukla. Kathmandu hotels are quoted separately in every tier, and our family homestay is USD 15 per person per night. Travelling alone on Standard means no porter, so the guide carries up to 10 kg of your gear. The down jacket, sleeping bag and duffel are lent to you on every tier.
Fitting a trek around the German calendar
School holidays differ by Land, so treat these as examples and check your own. In Baden-Württemberg the autumn break in 2026 is 26 to 30 October and the Easter break runs 25 March to 2 April 2027. Good Friday is 26 March and Easter Monday 29 March 2027. Ascension Day is Thursday 6 May and Whit Monday 17 May 2027, which gives you two long weekends inside the spring season. The legal minimum is 20 days of paid leave on a five-day week, so a 12-day trek plus travel is a big bite out of it and needs planning.
The summer holidays are the one clash. June to mid-September is monsoon in Nepal, with cloud, rain and disrupted flights, so July and August are the wrong months for Everest, Annapurna or Langtang. Two Nepali festivals matter for autumn: Dashain runs 17 to 23 October and Tihar 8 to 12 November 2026, when government offices close and permits take 48 hours of working days. Until the clocks go back on 25 October 2026, Nepal is 3 hours 45 minutes ahead of Germany, and 4 hours 45 minutes after that. For a month-by-month view, read when to trek in Nepal. The 2027 dates are set by the lunar calendar, so ask me before you fix flights for an autumn 2027 trip.
Visa for a German passport
You buy a tourist visa at Tribhuvan Airport when you land. The Department of Immigration fees are USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days (about EUR 45) and USD 125 for 90 days, in US dollars. You can fill in the form online first and show the receipt. Bring a passport valid for six months and one photo. Germany is not one of the twelve nationalities that must apply before travelling. The steps are in our visa on arrival guide.
Getting there from Frankfurt, and what the other airports mean
The fares are for economy with a checked bag, leaving Sunday 25 October 2026 and returning Wednesday 11 November, with at most one stop each way. Nothing was nonstop. The cheapest result, EUR 1,253, was Qatar Airways out via Doha and Air India home via Delhi; Qatar both ways was EUR 1,313; the dearest was EUR 1,393. Only Frankfurt was priced, so if you fly from Munich or Berlin, search your own airport. Whatever you book, land in Kathmandu a full day before any Lukla flight, never the same evening. The detailed fare table and the all-in totals are in our Everest Base Camp cost guide for Germany.
Insurance: the Krankenkasse is not enough
Statutory health insurance does not pay for a helicopter in the Khumbu or a flight home. You need an Auslandsreise-Krankenversicherung with rescue and repatriation, bought in Germany before you fly. Look in the small print for trekking up to 6,000 metres (Kala Patthar is 5,545 metres), helicopter evacuation, and illness as well as accident. If you belong to the Deutscher Alpenverein, ask what the membership covers abroad and to what height rather than assuming. Send me the wording and I will read it honestly. More in our guide to helicopter cover to 6,000 metres.
Language, food and the guide
Treks run in English. I cannot promise a German-speaking guide on every date, so ask me and I will tell you plainly who is available. Teahouse food is mostly dal bhat, noodles, eggs and soup; vegetarian is easy, and vegan and gluten-free need a word at booking. Nepal asks for a licensed guide on most routes, and we send one on every trek, including the Everest trail where the rule is not enforced locally.
Paying us from Germany
A 10 per cent deposit holds your dates, and you pay the balance in Kathmandu in US dollars or euros, in cash with no fee or by card with a 3.5 per cent charge added. We cannot take Nepali rupees. You can move the trek free of charge to any date within a year if you tell us at least 72 hours ahead (seven days for restricted-area routes). The deposit itself is not refunded if you cancel. If we are the ones who cannot run the trip, we refund what you paid less taxes, bank and card charges and money already spent on permits or flights.
Who to call in Europe
Our Europe representative, Shradha Simkhada, lives in Finland, which is one hour ahead of Germany, so your working days overlap. You can call or message her on +358 45 353 8606, including on WhatsApp. She handles European enquiries in English and can answer the first round of questions before they reach me in Kathmandu.
The German Embassy in Kathmandu is at Gyaneshwor Marg 690. It is open Monday to Thursday 07:45 to 15:00 and Friday 07:45 to 13:00, and it lists an on-call number for emergencies outside those hours.
Check us before you pay
The company registrar, TAAN (we are member 1586), the tourism licence and the foreign-exchange certificate are all public records, and I would look at each. A licence proves little on its own, because licensed operators have been involved in scams, so ask for a video call before sending a deposit. More than 300 travellers have reviewed us on TripAdvisor, Google and Trustpilot, and part of every booking supports the Nagarjun Learning Center.
Frequently asked questions
Do Germans need a visa for Nepal?
Yes, but you get it at Kathmandu airport. It costs USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days or USD 125 for 90 days, paid in dollars. You do not need to apply in advance.
How much does Everest Base Camp cost from Germany?
The trek is USD 1,399, 2,499 or 4,999 per person depending on tier, about EUR 1,250, EUR 2,235 and EUR 4,470. On top come flights, insurance, tips and a Kathmandu hotel. The cost guide for Germany adds it all up for one traveller.
Is there a direct flight from Germany to Kathmandu?
No. Every option connects at least once, usually in Doha, Istanbul, Delhi or the Gulf. The cheapest ticket took about 11 hours 45 minutes outbound.
What is the best time of year to trek from Germany?
October to mid-November and March to May. The German autumn and Easter breaks fall in those windows. July and August are monsoon, so they suit culture and not the high trails.
Can I trek in Nepal in the German summer holidays?
Not the big treks. The paths are wet, the views are mostly cloud and flights get cancelled. If summer is your only window, tell me and I will say honestly what is still worth doing.
Is my German health insurance valid for a Nepal trek?
The statutory Krankenkasse does not cover rescue or repatriation there. Buy a travel policy with cover to 6,000 metres and helicopter evacuation before you leave Germany.
Do I need a guide, or can I trek on my own?
A licensed guide is required on most routes and compulsory in restricted areas like Manaslu. We put one on every trek. A solo traveller can book a private departure, or opt into one of our fixed group departures.
I only hike in the Alps. Is that enough preparation?
It is a good base for the legs. The new part is altitude, which you meet by going slowly and using the two acclimatisation days in the plan. Long loaded days on consecutive weekends are the best training.
How do I pay, and is the deposit refundable?
Ten per cent holds your date and the balance is due in Kathmandu in dollars or euros. You can reschedule free within a year with 72 hours notice. The deposit itself is not refunded if you cancel.
