How the shared-seat Everest helicopter tour works: the morning, the Kala Patthar landing, shared versus private, permits, altitude, best months and the cost.

Last updated 16 October 2026.

Short answer: Our Everest Base Camp Helicopter Tour, Shared Seat flies you from Kathmandu up the Khumbu valley to the foot of Everest in one morning, on a single seat of the operator's helicopter rather than a whole charter. You are back in Kathmandu by late morning. For two to four people it costs USD 2,105 per person on Budget (a flight over the Khumbu, no landing), USD 2,515 on Standard and USD 2,535 on Luxury (both with a planned landing at Kala Patthar, about 5,545 m, and breakfast). It suits people who want to see Everest close up and have one morning, not two weeks.

I am Shreejan. A shared seat is the way to see Everest by helicopter without paying for the whole aircraft. Here is how it works, how it differs from a private charter, and what it really costs.

How does the morning run?

StepWhat happens
Early morningPick-up from your Kathmandu hotel and transfer to the domestic airport
FlightUp the Khumbu valley towards Everest, on a seat of the operator's helicopter
Standard and LuxuryA landing at Kala Patthar, the viewpoint above Everest Base Camp, where the weather and the operator allow, and breakfast
BudgetA flight over the Khumbu without a landing
Late morningBack in Kathmandu and the transfer to your hotel

The helicopter flies only in clear conditions, so it leaves early. The operator makes the final call on the day, and a landing is never guaranteed.

If you are four and want the aircraft to yourselves, look at our private Everest Base Camp helicopter tour. For a side-by-side comparison of the options, read our helicopter day tours guide.

What does it cost?

2 to 4 peopleUSD 2,105USD 2,515USD 2,535
5 to 8 peopleUSD 2,085USD 2,500USD 2,515

Prices are per person, read from our booking system on 16 October 2026. The full price list is on the trip page.

On a shared seat each person buys one seat, so the price hardly changes with group size. Budget is a flight over the Khumbu with transfers by vehicle, the Sagarmatha National Park permit, the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality fee and taxes. Standard adds the planned landing at Kala Patthar, breakfast, the TIMS card and a private vehicle for the transfers. Luxury is the same flight with an SUV-class vehicle.

Not included: your Kathmandu hotel, other meals, insurance, the visa, tips, and any extra landing time or change to the flight plan on the day.

When is the best time to fly?

MonthsWhat to expect
October to DecemberThe most settled weather and the clearest views
February to MayGood flying, with more cloud building by late morning in spring
June and SeptemberPossible on clear mornings, with more cancellations
July and AugustMonsoon cloud; we do not plan this tour then

Our published flying months are February to June and September to December.

Is the altitude a problem?

A landing at about 5,500 m gives your body no time to acclimatise. The stay on the ground is short, but some people feel light-headed or short of breath. Move slowly, follow the pilot, and tell us about any heart, lung or blood-pressure condition before you book. Dress for far below freezing: warm layers, a windproof jacket, gloves, sunglasses and sun cream. More on this is in our altitude guide.

What insurance do you need?

Your policy should cover helicopter flights and altitude up to 6,000 m, because Kala Patthar is about 5,545 m. Buy it at home before you travel. We do not recommend insurance bought in Nepal.

Questions people ask

How much is an Everest helicopter tour on a shared seat? From USD 2,105 per person on Budget with no landing, or USD 2,515 on Standard with a planned landing at Kala Patthar and breakfast.

Does the helicopter land at Everest Base Camp? On Standard and Luxury a landing is planned at Kala Patthar, the viewpoint above base camp, where the weather and the operator allow. It is never guaranteed.

How long is the tour? One morning. You are back in Kathmandu by late morning.

Can a solo traveller book? Yes. A shared seat is the usual choice for one person: USD 2,125 on Budget.

What if the weather is bad? The operator decides on the morning. If the flight cannot go, we work with you on another morning, so keep a spare day in Kathmandu.

Would a trek be better? If you have the time, yes. Our 12-day Everest Base Camp trek gives you the valley on foot. Read mountain flight, helicopter or trek.

What are the booking terms?

Group size is 1 to 8, and solo travellers are welcome; a solo price covers the whole cost for one person, so it is higher per person. The deposit is 10 per cent. It is non-refundable and there is no refund if you cancel, but you can move your trip free of charge to any date within one year with at least 72 hours notice. If we cannot run the trip ourselves, we refund what you paid, less taxes, bank or card charges and any money already spent, such as permits and flights. The balance is paid when you arrive, in US dollars or euros, cash or card. Card carries a 3.5 per cent bank charge and cash carries none. We do not take Nepali rupees from foreign guests.
