Nepal Trekking from Hong Kong: HKD Prices & Guide

Last updated 10 October 2026. Hong Kong dollar figures use the European Central Bank reference rate of 9 October 2026, US$1 = HK$7.85; the Hong Kong dollar is tied to the US dollar, so the rate barely moves. The flight fares are from the Hong Kong search I ran on 7 October 2026 for a late-October trip, and they are repeated in the cost guide.

Trekking in Nepal from Hong Kong: the short answer

USD 1,399, USD 2,499 or USD 4,999 is what one person pays for the 12-day Everest Base Camp trek on Budget, Standard or Luxury (parties of one to four), roughly HKD 10,980, HKD 19,610 and HKD 39,230. Those prices hold for 2027. Hong Kong passport holders buy the visa on arrival. Cathay Pacific flies Hong Kong to Kathmandu nonstop in about 5 hours 20 minutes, and the cheapest connecting fare in my search was HK$6,694 return. Send me your dates on WhatsApp, +977 9810351300, and I will come back with a price.

A short flight, a long way up

Few cities are as well placed for Nepal. The nonstop is the point: the schedule in my search leaves Hong Kong at 18:25 and lands in Kathmandu at 21:30 the same night, which changes what a short leave can do. The mountain does not shrink to match. Hong Kong's highest point, Tai Mo Shan, is 957 metres, about a third of the height of Lukla at 2,860, and Everest Base Camp is 5,364. Spend the first days walking slowly, and let the two rest days among the 12 do their work.

Please note: for Poon Hill, 6 days, the table assumes two to four people, while one person alone pays USD 960 (Standard) or USD 1,930 (Luxury); Poon Hill from Pokhara (4 days) is priced for two to four, and solo prices are USD 770, 980 and 2,020; the Langtang row is for a solo trekker; a party of two to four pays USD 320, USD 570 and USD 800.

With the nonstop flight, a long weekend plus a few days can already cover Poon Hill, the four-day version from Pokhara in particular. Annapurna Base Camp needs nine days and reaches 4,130 metres without a mountain flight. Everest Base Camp takes 12 days on the trail. Mardi Himal and Langtang are quieter choices.

Pick a tier by deciding what you want to carry and where you want to sleep. On Budget you carry your own bag, share rooms and pay for trail meals. On Standard every meal is paid, rooms are private and a porter looks after two people's bags. On Luxury the porter is yours alone, the room is deluxe and private, and Everest trekkers fly by helicopter to and from Lukla. A solo trekker on Standard has no porter, so the guide takes up to 10 kg. No tier includes Kathmandu hotels (USD 15 a night per person at our homestay). Jacket, sleeping bag and duffel are loaned on every tier.

Flights from Hong Kong

The Hong Kong search was for one adult in economy with a checked bag, leaving on Sunday 25 October 2026 and returning on Wednesday 11 November, on a single ticket with at most one change each way. There were 15 itineraries from HK$6,694 to HK$9,029. The cheapest, HK$6,694, was Air China out through Chengdu with an overnight wait (arriving in Kathmandu at 10:55 on 26 October, about 23 hours 30 minutes) and Thai Airways home through Bangkok. A second search, for nonstop flights only, found one itinerary: Cathay Pacific both ways at HK$10,902, with CX603 leaving at 18:25 and landing at 21:30, and CX640 leaving Kathmandu at 22:55. Spring 2027 fares will not match these, so search again once your dates are fixed. The sums with a fare in them are in the Everest Base Camp cost guide for Hong Kong.

Visa for a Hong Kong passport

Nepal's list of visa-exempt passports names only a few diplomatic and official holders, and Hong Kong is not on it, so you take the visa on arrival. Hong Kong is not among the twelve countries that must apply beforehand. Thirty days, which almost every trek needs, is USD 50 (about HKD 390); 15 days is USD 30 and 90 days is USD 125, payable in US dollars. The online form saves time at the desk. See the visa on arrival guide and the e-visa guide.

Holidays and clocks for 2027

Paid annual leave in Hong Kong starts at seven days and rises by one a year to a maximum of 14, according to the Labour Department, so most people join leave to public holidays. For spring 2027 the government calendar has Easter from Friday 26 to Monday 29 March, Ching Ming on Monday 5 April, Labour Day on Saturday 1 May and the Buddha's Birthday on Thursday 13 May. Hong Kong is 2 hours 15 minutes ahead of Nepal all year. Plan around the festivals. For 2027, Dashain is expected around 6 to 10 October and Tihar around 29 to 31 October, both subject to the government's yearly confirmation, and permits wait for working days (48 hours) when the offices close. See the festival calendar.

Insurance

Hong Kong's public hospitals are for residents at home. Buy a travel policy before you go. Three clauses matter. Trekking up to 6,000 metres (Kala Patthar is 5,545). Helicopter evacuation, a bill of USD 3,000 to USD 5,000 (HKD 23,540 to HKD 39,240) if you carry it yourself. And sickness as well as accident. I will read a policy if you send it. See helicopter cover to 6,000 metres.

What the Hong Kong government says, and who to call

The Security Bureau's Outbound Travel Alert for Nepal is amber, the level for signs of a threat that may affect the safety of Hong Kong residents. The page lists the floods and landslides of 26 August 2026 in Rasuwa district, north of the Khumbu valley where we walk, and protests that began in September 2025. Two numbers to save: the Immigration Department's 24-hour line for Hong Kong residents in trouble abroad, (852) 1868, and the Chinese Embassy in Nepal's consular protection line, (977) 1 4531511. The Immigration Department also runs Registration for Outbound Travel Information, which lets it contact you if something happens. Register before you leave.

Language, food and the guide

Treks run in English. I cannot promise a Cantonese or Mandarin-speaking guide, so ask and I will answer honestly for your dates. Teahouse food is dal bhat, noodles, rice and soup; vegetarians do well. A licensed guide walks with you on every trek, which is also the rule on most routes in Nepal.

Paying us from Hong Kong

The money side is simple. You leave a 10 per cent deposit to hold the dates. In Kathmandu you pay the remaining 90 per cent in dollars or euros, and you can choose cash (free) or card (3.5 per cent on top). We do not accept Hong Kong dollars or Nepali rupees. Any date within a year with 72 hours' notice, or seven days for restricted areas. The deposit itself is not refunded if you cancel. When a trek is cancelled by us, the refund is everything paid except taxes, bank and card charges and sums already spent on permits and flights.

Check us before you pay

Checking a Nepali operator is easy and worth ten minutes. Our company registration, our TAAN membership (1586), our tourism licence and our forex certificate are public records. None of them proves honesty by itself, because licensed companies have been caught up in scams too, which is why I offer a call before any payment. You will find over 300 reviews of us on TripAdvisor, Google and Trustpilot. The Nagarjun Learning Center receives part of what you pay.

Frequently asked questions

Do Hong Kong residents need a visa for Nepal?

Yes. You get it at Kathmandu airport on arrival, for USD 30 (15 days), USD 50 (30 days) or USD 125 (90 days). A photo and six months of passport validity are needed.

How much does Everest Base Camp cost from Hong Kong?

The trek is USD 1,399, 2,499 or 4,999 per person by tier, about HKD 10,980, HKD 19,610 and HKD 39,230. In my October 2026 search a return flight was HK$6,694 to HK$10,902, and insurance, tips and Kathmandu hotels come on top.

Is there a direct flight from Hong Kong to Kathmandu?

Yes. Cathay Pacific flies it nonstop, about 5 hours 20 minutes out and 4 hours 10 minutes home. A nonstop-only search returned one itinerary, Cathay Pacific both ways.

How many days of leave do I need for Everest Base Camp?

About 14 days in all. The trek is 12 days, plus a night in Kathmandu at each end, so most people join annual leave to a public holiday.

Which trek suits a long weekend?

Poon Hill, especially the four-day version from Pokhara. Everest Base Camp does not fit into a long weekend.

When is the best time to go?

March to May and October to November. In 2027 Dashain is expected around 6 to 10 October and Tihar around 29 to 31 October.

Can I pay in Hong Kong dollars?

Not in Hong Kong dollars. Dollars and euros only, paid in Kathmandu in cash (no fee) or by card (3.5 per cent).

What insurance do I need?

Cover that reaches 6,000 metres, pays for a rescue helicopter and treats altitude sickness as an illness.

Where do I get help if something goes wrong?

Call the Immigration Department's 24-hour line, (852) 1868, and your insurer's emergency number. You can also send me a message, as I answer on WhatsApp.

Can I trek alone?

Yes, and many do. You can walk privately with a guide, or opt into one of our fixed group departures.
