Mohare Danda trek in 8 days: Nangi village, community lodges, the 3,300 m ridge, hot springs at Tatopani, permits, best months and cost by tier.

Last updated 11 October 2026.

Short answer: The Mohare Danda trek is an 8-day community trek in the Annapurna foothills that climbs from Beni to a ridge at 3,300 m, sleeps in village-run lodges, and ends with a soak in the hot springs at Tatopani. It is moderate, it is quiet, and the ridge looks straight at Dhaulagiri and the Annapurna range at sunset and sunrise. Our Mohare Danda Trek, 8 days is USD 699 (Budget), USD 1,399 (Standard) or USD 2,299 (Luxury) per person for 1 to 4 people, with the Annapurna Conservation Area permit and TIMS card included. The best months are October to November and March to April.

When people ask me for a trek near the Poon Hill trail that is not the Poon Hill trail, this is one of the two I name. The other is Khopra Danda, and I compare them below. Mohare is the gentler of the two, a trek of villages and forest more than of high ground, and it gives you something the busy routes cannot: a night in a Magar village where the lodge is owned by the community.

The trail starts at the Galeshwor temple, a Shiva shrine on a rock above the Kali Gandaki, about three and a half hours by road from Pokhara. You cross a suspension bridge and climb stone steps and terraces to Bans Kharka, the first community lodge, where on a clear afternoon Dhaulagiri shows itself up the valley. It is a short first day by design.

Why sleep in Nangi?

Nangi is a Pun Magar village of about seven hundred people. It is also the birthplace of Mahabir Pun, who is known across Nepal for bringing wireless internet to remote hill villages, and who has been recognised internationally for it. On our itinerary you spend the afternoon walking round the village: the school, the organic farm, the paper workshop and the yak and fish projects that help pay for them. This is the part of Mohare that I like best, because it shows how a village can build its own income without waiting for outsiders. It is an easy afternoon and it gives you a reason to arrive early. The climb to Nangi passes through pine, oak and rhododendron forest, with lunch at Danda Kateri.

What is the ridge like?

Day 4 is the long day. The trail leaves the fields and climbs through dense rhododendron and bamboo forest, with a couple of clearings for a rest, and comes out on the crest in the afternoon. The lodge sits right on the ridge at 3,300 m. At sunset Dhaulagiri and Annapurna South turn orange, and from the ridge you can count the peaks from Dhaulagiri through Nilgiri and Annapurna to Machhapuchhre. You get up before dawn for the sunrise over the whole range, have breakfast and start the descent. It is cold at night on the ridge, so pack a warm hat and a good sleeping bag; the sleeping bag and down jacket are free to use with us.

Is Mohare Danda difficult?

It is moderate. Days 4 and 5 are about six hours each, the climb on day 4 is steady and the descent on day 5 is steep in places, so poles earn their keep. You sleep no higher than 3,300 m, which is lower than Khopra, and the altitude is mild but real, so your guide still checks your oxygen levels. If you walk two to three hours a day at home and take stairs well, you can do it. My altitude guide covers the basics.

Budget has shared rooms, no porter and meals paid at the lodges. Standard has twin rooms, three meals a day and one porter for every two trekkers; a solo Standard trekker has no porter, and the guide carries up to 10 kg. Luxury has the best rooms, meals with fruit, nuts and soft drinks, and a dedicated porter for every trekker. An extra porter is USD 25 a day plus 13 per cent VAT and the 3.5 per cent bank charge. Kathmandu hotel nights are not included.

Where do you sleep and what do you eat?

You sleep in community lodges, owned by the villages and run for their income. They are simple: twin rooms on Standard, shared on Budget, basic menus of dal bhat, noodles and eggs. At Tatopani you get a proper lodge and a soak in the hot springs on the river bank, which feels very good after the ridge. My Tatopani guide has more about the springs.
